10th Commandment: July 15

Jul 15, 2014

My black wrap dress fell victim to a new, inferior dry cleaner.  Here are a few possible replacements.

DvF New Julian Dress ($325)

The New Julian, in my opinion, is the best DvF wrap because there’s no silly collar and they 3/4 sleeve is my preference.

MICHAEL Michael Kors Wrap Dress ($219)

This is the dress I’m going to buy.  The waist is incredibly slimming and the draping of the skirt is lovely.  Also, it ties in the back similar to the Issa dresses Kate Middleton has worn.

Paid Intern

Karen Kane Wrap Dress ($108)

A bit more expensive than the typical Intern item.  It’s available for sale in size small and large for $50 at Macy’s.  It’s on Amazon for $32 in x-small, medium, and extra large.

Plus-size: IGIGI wrap dress ($98) Petite or Tall: BR Gemma Wrap ($95)

Love these options. Do you have any suggestions for styling a black wrap dress? Every time I put one on, I feel stumped about shoes, cardigan/jacket, hair, etc. Then I try a few options, then I feel too matronly, then I give up for a few weeks, then I get inspired and try again, without success. It’s an endless loop 🙂

Yes, would love one of the four way posts on this!!! How to wear to the office, dinner, brunch, etc.

    • Belle says:

I never mess up a wrap with a jacket or a cardigan. It doesn’t need it in my opinion. I’ll add some bracelets and a good shoe and call it done.

      • SLG says:

I agree, additional layers aren’t needed from a styling perspective, but I still find myself stumped when I know I’ll be in cold offices/meeting rooms, etc., and want my layers to look intentional and a little fashion-forward. Shoes stump me too (just heels, or do flats work? etc.). So all styling pointers are welcome!

        • Belle says:

I’ll carry a big wrap scarf if I think I’ll be cold. Usually ivory or a print. I wear heels usually, but I have worn flats as well. Pointed toe, or other structured style, is best.

    • Pancakes says:

I would go for a modern animal print cardigan to avoid looking matronly. Either that or a scarf, like Belle suggested

  2. I have been eying the new Julian and hoping it will go on sale in Outnet or somewhere soon! DVF wraps are truly the best!!

  3. Barchbo says:

I love the new Julian but I think I am going to go for that Michael Kors – it looks a little longer in the hem and I love the wrap in the back. Wrap dress, meet my 40s.

  4. SSC says:

I believe that Karen Kane dress is marked down to $71-ish at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

  5. s says:

i own three (3!) gemma wrap dresses. i realllllyyyy love that michael kors dress though! too bad they don’t have it in any colors besides black, i would buy that in a nanosecond.

  6. Leigh says:

I really love the MK one, but dang, 63 dollars more for customs and shipping? No thanks. I had it in my bag ready to buy, but that convinced me that I don’t need it *that* badly.

    • Belle says:

I’m hoping it will be offered from a US seller. I haven’t been able to find one though. If I don’t see one soon, I’ll probably order from the foreign seller.

      • Leigh says:

Yeah, I scoured the internets and couldn’t find another in the US. I may keep an eye on it though, because it’s gorgeous!

  7. Gabby says:

COVET the Michael Kors, but I’ve always had tastes more expensive than my wallet can deal with (thanks, $650/month of law school loan repayment!)

  8. Susie says:

Dresses that tie in the back are waist-flattering when you’re standing up, but I find them uncomfortable for a long day sitting in a chair with that knot in your back.

  9. […] Michael Kors Faux Wrap Maxi Dress. With all the talk about wrap dresses at CapHillStyle last week, I got to searching for my own neurosciency-approved Michael Kors wrap dress […]

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
