Dress: J.Crew Gwen Dress ($178)
Upper Left, Blazer: H&M Single Breasted Blazer ($29) // Shoes: Kors Flex Pump ($100) // Bag: Ralph Lauren Newbury Satchel ($298) // Necklace: Shoptiques Aqua Necklace ($72)
The simplest way to make an outfit from your basic navy dress is with a white blazer. This one from H&M has a great shape and an even better price. A traditional blazer is great, but if you want something different, try this long, tweed jacket from Vince Camuto. Very Olivia Pope.
For the accessories, I chose a simple “nude” shoe. You could sub in a light grey or snakeskin if you prefer that. I also love the mix of the red satchel with the aqua necklace, it’s one of my favorite color combinations. Want a cheaper satchel? This Nine West Double Vision satchel is a great under-$75 alternative.
Upper Right, Bag: BCBGeneration Wilson Tote ($78) // Shoes: Ivanka Trump Cleo Pumps ($120) // Sweater: Factory Clare Cardigan in Navy Dot ($35) // Earrings: Kendra Philip Enamel Studs ($42)
Prefer cardigans to blazers? This navy dotted cardi from J.Crew Factory is a lovely choice. I also like this Merona cardi with a navy fan print and this ikat cardigan from LOFT (also in petites). Plus-size? Try this teal and navy dotted cardigan from Land’s End.
The tote is from BCBGeneration and comes in more than a half-dozen great colors. I love the pale mint and the light coral. I also like the dark cognac color on the pumps as an alternative to flesh-tone shoes. This outfit keeps to a neutral color palette, but it does it with style and class.
Bottom Right, Shoes: Michael Kors Snakeskin Pump ($110) // Bag: Mondani Ostrich Satchel ($75) // Earrings: Jones New York Drops ($24) // Blazer: Topshop Betty Scallop Blazer ($110)
I have been waiting weeks for a reason to use this adorable scallop-edge jacket. I also found a similar jacket in white at Modcloth, and a swingy one at ASOS in pink. You can also pair the lavender Topshop jacket with gray and white, or mix it with jewel tones.
This bag is pretty cute for something in the under-$100 range. If you prefer something simple, try this uniquely shaped Ore satchel from Yoox. And to play off the colors of the jacket, I chose these earrings in a deeper purple hue.
Bottom Left, Scarf: Vince Camuto Abstract Scarf ($38) // Bag: Sydney Love Satchel ($106) // Bracelets: Sequin Bracelet Set ($18) // Shoes: BP Moveover Flat ($50)
Lastly, I put together an outfit for those who can go sleeveless at work. I like to pair simple sheaths with bold printed and colored scarves. This abstract, almost-watercolor print caught my eye immediately. I also like this floral-printed scarf from Club Monaco and this interesting pale blue scarf with a modern take on paisley prints.
I paired the dress with a simple flat, but you could wear a pump if you prefer. To pick up the colors in the scarf, I chose this teal bag. You could also choose a purple dome satchel if you’re so inclined. And since the dress is sleeveless, it would benefit from the addition of an inexpensive stack of bracelets.
such a good post Belle! I want to wear everything!
Awesome! I just bought a navy and gray sheath from J.Crew yesterday – thanks!
Watch out for the slit in the J. Crew Gwen dress. It borders on inappropriate for an office.
Good to know. Time to see a tailor.
I’ve been reading this blog for almost two years and this just might be my favorite post. I love how you take one foundation item and come up with several options to style it. Visualizing the styling helps linear thinkers like me (hi, I’m an accountant)step outside the neutral box.
You have a gift! So glad you are going to keep blogging through law school. 🙂
+1. A navy sheath is now on my shopping list. Any recommendations for one with shot sleeves?
Short sleeves* 🙂
I have this one: https://www.bluefly.com/Tahari-ASL-navy-woven-asymmetrical-neck-belted-dress/cat20102/319052902/detail.fly It’s sold out now but you might be able to find it on a different site. It’s pretty decent. You might not be able to tell from the picture, but the fabric has a slight sheen to it which makes it a bit more dressy. I’ve found that it’s a bit much for daily office wear, but good on presentation days 🙂
Love Navy sheath dresses! Always so classy. I need to try out the bottom right one. Thanks for the inspiration Belle.
This is a super post. Thank you!
Belle, do you think a cardigan and a blazer are equally formal/office appropriate? I find cardigans so much more comfortable, but I work in a pretty formal fed office and am never sure if they’re formal enough for meetings.
Thanks!
No. A blazer is more professional, but that does not mean that a cardi is unprofessional. For meetings, it depends on who the meeting is with and whether it’s a big meeting.
