10th Commandment: March 25

04681_WO1385J.Crew boy shirt end-on-end ($78)

The French-blue, button-up shirt is a classic.  It can be worn to work or worn casually.  It can be paired with nearly any color, neutral or bold.

This J.Crew shirt is a great option if you want something with a menswear fit.  If you’re looking for something with a more feminine cut, the classic Brooks Brothers non-iron shirt is a good option.

I’m also a fan of Banana Republic’s shirts.  In my opinion, the quality has stayed fairly consistent over the years.  I own their blue Oxford shirt (on sale for $55, also in petite) and I love it.  If you want something in a more “corporate” fabric, their sateen non-iron shirt (also in petite) is also a good bet.  And if you’re a penny pincher, don’t buy BR at full-price. They have sales every week (usually on Tuesdays) where you can save as much as 40-percent-off.

If you’re looking for something more casual, a chambray shirt is an option in some workplaces just make sure to choose the right fabric.  I like this tailored chambray shirt from Gap and this softened chambray shirt from LOFT (also in petite).  Looking for an inexpensive option?  This Merona shirt from Target looks good, though I might change out the black buttons.

Plus-size?  I like this Jones New York shirt and this Land’s End button-up that comes in a richer shade of blue.

I love buttoned shirts but they’re always tight across the chest even when I go up several sizes (I think this is actually because I have broad shoulders, as my chest isn’t that big). Does anyone know brands that fit broad-shouldered women, preferably without the lower half of the shirt looking like a tent?

I have the same problem with broad shoulders and I buy JCrew’s men’s slim fit shirts in XS. They fit perfectly.

Thank you so much for answering my question!! I had wondered about the cage sandal and then here it is in your suggestion! All great choices. Super helpful. Thank you.

You might also want to try the Shirt by Rochelle Behrens https://the-shirt.com/collections/the-essentials I haven’t bought one of her styles yet but am thinking about it. Her new Essentials line is more affordable than her regular stuff which is almost $200 per shirt.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
