Martin Fit, Cobalt Wool Trouser (Banana Republic, $110)

My winter wardrobe has become too neutral for my liking–lots of black, grey and ivory.  I’ve been trying to add more color, but my efforts are slow-going.  So when I spotted this bright, bold cobalt trousers, I had to try them.

I wasn’t expecting much.  Banana hasn’t exactly been batting 1.000 lately.  Not to mention that I’m not a big fan of pants.  But these pants, these pants are something special.

Unlike so many trousers of the market, they’re fully lined.  They drape beautifully (the picture doesn’t do them justice), and they’re surprisingly comfortable.  My only complaint is that the pockets are very poorly placed for the pear-shaped.  I had to have them removed and sewn shut.  Problem solved.

If the trouser cut isn’t for you, J.Crew made a cobalt tweed pair.  And DvF is selling a slick cobalt pant with a black waistband.

Think colored trousers might be for you?  I also found this tomato red pair from Jones New York.  If you prefer muted colors to brights, I would look at these phenomenal burgundy tab-front pants from The Limited.  I also found these emerald-green trousers with a bow detail.

I love these! I have some red Kate Spade ones from a couple of seasons ago that I adore. LIke you, I hate hate hate pants, but I can actually get on board with colored ones. Pants have to be special for me to like them. 🙂

Any ideas on how to style tomato-red pants like the ones you featured? I have a pair, and I have trouble figuring out what to wear with them.

    • m says:

I second that request! I own tomato-red pants but can’t figure out what shoes or tops go with them.

    • Meka says:

I’m not Belle but wanted to share how I wear my tomato red pants. I love wearing them with the J Crew perfect shirt in leopard from a couple of seasons ago, a black blazer and black pumps. I have lots of freedom to wear what I like, even though I’m an attorney, and will also wear the pants with an orange or pink top instead. I honestly think that red is more neutral than people think and you could wear anything, as conservative or as “creative” as your workplace dictates.

    Two ways, please.

  4. L says:

Gotta give a heads up on these in the Ivory color…totally see through! Yes, they are lined, but you can still see the seams, pocket lining, etc. Don’t even want to guess what else would show if I kept them…so I took them back. Still searching for decent ivory (winter white) pants.

  5. Chloe says:

I own three pairs of colored pants from the Limited. I freakin’ love them.

  6. Gigi says:

So funny, I was just looking at the BR site this morning. I may go for it as the pants are 40% off today(online only)!

  7. Devon says:

I love the cobalt blue and would like to add these pants to my closet filled with black, navy blue and grey pants. But I’ve always felt colored pants might be too young for me to pull off. Is there an age/size where wearing such a beautiful color might be wishful thinking only? Or is that just me imagining what my grandmother would say?

    • I think you could even wear them until you’re 80. Why not?

Just don’t go crazy with the colours or patterns when pairing them.

Cobalt blue on the bottom, a simple neutral silk shirt on top, simple jewellery… I can imagine myself at 80 still wearing these pants.

I bought them and they’re DIVINE.

  8. Belle — How much did it cost to remove the pockets?

  9. […] mentioned it in one of her 10 Commandment roundups as being perfectly draped, fully lined and 100% wool, all things I agree with as being […]

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
