I didn’t quite get to all of the Ask Belles that I wanted to last week, and on top of that, I received several interesting questions that I want to answer.  So why not feature one more week of reader mail?

Madewell Skinny Ankle Jeans ($99)

White jeans are great for summer, especially if you live in a cooler climate.  I like these skinny jeans from Madewell, but if you’re looking to spend a bit less, I like these Kut jeans ($45) and these Forever 21 jeans are a steal at under-$20.

Want a wider leg opening?  I tried on a pair of these curvy straight leg jeans from Loft and I liked them.  I also think these flare leg jeans from Mango might be worth a shot.  These denim trousers from Ann Taylor look great and come in tall, petite and regular sizes.  AT also make a nice denim bootcut jean.

Petite?  Try these modern straight leg jeans.  Plus-size?  Eddie Bauer and Michael Kors have a good selection of jeans.

All of these choices cost under-$100, but if you have more to spend, my favorite brand is AG.  They make the Angel and the Ballad, a flare and a slim bootcut.  If you want skinny jeans, I like the Paige Skyline cut.

I would love a recommendation of where you take jeans to be hemmed.

I have a pair of strait leg white jeans from Level 99 that fit like a glove, or a glove that’s too long :/ right now I cuff them to wear with flats, but I would like to get them hemmed so I’m not tripping over excess fabric. My issue is that I don’t want them to *look* hemmed (and the last time my current alterations place hemmed jeans it was not a pretty sight… suit pants turned out fabulous, jeans were a disaster).

    Any suggestions?

NIce list–I’d just say to be careful on those F21 jeans. I’ve had bad experiences with their jeans, including a pair of dark ones that had a horrible smell that got into all my clothes when I washed them with them. Just be careful of see-through-ness, though often a good pair of nude seamless panties from VS can do the job.

Old Navy’s Rockstar jeans are great in white!! I had to go up a few sizes, but I love them, super comfy and the price ($19 when on sale) is right. I’m 5′ 8″ and they hit RIGHT at the ankle which looks great w/heels and flats.

I just bought a pair of slim white jeans from White House Black Market that totally rock. Completely opaque with the perfect amount of stretch.

Regarding hemming, you must ask the tailor to “preserve the original hem.” They actually cut off and then reattach the original hem invisibly. If they don’t know what you’re talking about, go somewhere else.

I don’t recommend hemming jeans you plan to wash often. Personal experience has taught me that the fading will eventually reveal the previously “invisible” stitching where the original hem was reattached.

I’ve heard the best place for jeans hemming designer denim is the alterations dept in the department store where you bought them, but I’ve never tried that.
