Black Peplum Skirt ($35)

Peplums are a trend that has sustained far past when I thought it would.  However, peplums are hard to pull off for apple and pear shapes.  The solution?  A peplum that adds volume in the front, but keeps things sleek in the back.  Otherwise you end up adding volume where none was needed, or even worse, creating the look of having to rear ends.  No thanks.

Luckily, this skirt gives you the look of a peplum without the extra weight.  And at only $35 it’s a great deal.

Frankly, I like peplum skirts. They add a bit of vintage whimsy to an otherwise staid work wardrobe.  And I think that if you’re willing to try on a few, you can find one that enhances your figure.

I also like this Kensie skirt with a longer peplum, under-$50.  Also, if you want color, try this bright pink peplum ($23), this teal peplum ($35) and this cobalt skirt ($35).  And if you don’t mind a mini-skirt, I LOVE the clean lines, 2001-Space-Odyssey styling of this orange skirt from The Limited.

Plus size?  I didn’t find a skirt that I loved, but I did find this under-$100 peplum dress.  Add a belt and this dress is money.  Petite? How about a $17 skirt?  Or this pretty pink dress?  Dealer’s choice.

I love this skirt and the price is fantastic! Does anyone know what the sizing is like? Normally I wear a 0 in skirts, but this starts at a 2 so I’m hoping it runs small.

I’m a four, and I usually buy a six in their bottoms (tops I’m still a 4) just in case and then have them tailored.

I always want to try out peplum but have been discouraged since everything so far just adds volume to my hips and backside, which I do not need it. I’ll try again with your suggestions! Thanks so much!

Try this one, and Zara sometimes makes on that is also just in the front, so it lays fairly flat. I’m pear-shaped, so I have the same issue, and the Zara peplums sort of glide over it, which provides a weird sort of camouflage.

I found out a couple months ago that my boyfriend really likes the look of peplums (he is oddly in tune with women’s fashion), particularly on dresses and skirts. I just don’t wear anything like that, but I’m not opposed, so it’s nice to see a source I trust recommending some things. No, I’m not going to “dress for my man,” but if his opinion and the opinion of a renowned fashion blogger coincide, why not?

  4. AR says:

I’m more of a pear shape and I find that peplum tops work really well on me. The peplum/ruffle sits up a little higher than the peplums on the skirt and you don’t have the volume issue at your hips. Just an fyi for ladies who want to participate in the trend without adding any extra booty.

I have quite the tummy (seriously, huge), so I thought peplum wasn’t for me. Because it was on sale, I tried this Ann Taylor dress https://www.anntaylor.com/ann/catalog/productDetails.jsp?prodId=310133. IT IS SO FLATTERING!!!! Highly recommend.

Thanks Belle — if not for your constant featuring of peplum, I would never have been so desperate to try one 🙂

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
