Blazer: labworks Peplum Jacket ($45)

From Right, Ring: Trina Turk Bubble Ring ($85) Bag: Double Zip Tote ($151) Shoes: Kate Spade Karolina ($298) Scarf: Tory Burch Layton Scarf ($165) Top: Tibi Silk Halter ($198) Skirt: Steven Schraut Pleated Skirt ($245)

For the Office, Now.  Chilly, anyone?  This late season cold snap has my favorite dresses and skirts languishing on their hangers, begging for spring.  Luckily, this chic peplum jacket can be worn both now and later.

I chose grey trousers instead of navy because I would never have been able to find a perfect match for the jacket.  Sometimes women try to use two black or two navy pieces to make suit when the pieces aren’t from the same brand, so the dye color and the fabric weave are just slightly off.  It’s not the best look, so in that situation, I do think it’s best to pair them with another color.

Looking for a cheaper grey pant?  Try these Anne Klein’s, and if you need a plus-size, these Allison Dailey’s should do the trick.

For this outfit, I would wear the jacket unbuttoned, exposing the printed top underneath.  I chose this watercolor print for the mix of pastels, but you could also wear something in a tie neck with a darker palette.

The jewelry has soft tones of ivory, grey and purple.  The earrings are gorgeous, but if you want something more affordable, try these Kate Spade’s for $38 or these NY & Co. earrings for $10.  And if you want a moonstone ring for less, this tiny one is $37.  As for the rest of the accessories, a fun kitten heel and a navy bag complete the look.

For the hair, it could work worn down with curled ends, or up, twisted into a low bun.  For the makeup, I would choose a pink gloss and a pale purple nail polish, like Essie Go Ginza.

For the Office, Later.  This outfit was inspired by our icon from across the pond, HRH Duchess Katharine, who seems to favor pleated bottoms with jackets on top.  Polished, feminine, classic.  No wonder her photos fill up hundreds of Pinterest pages.

The top underneath the jacket isn’t really meant to be seen.  It’s just there in case you have to remove your jacket.  If you work in a very conservative office, this halter will not work for you.  Try something sleeveless-to-the-shoulder instead.  As for cheaper options for the skirt, all I could find was this dotted pleat from The Limited and this banded pleat skirt (in black and ivory) from Ralph Lauren.

Because the neckline on this jacket is so high, a necklace won’t really work.  (It’ll hang crooked over the lapel and look all sorts of wonky.)  Choose printed scarf in a light fabric and a bold color instead.  I love this orange, but this one is a bit cheaper.  If orange isn’t your thing, try yellow/pale blue or teal/blue.

I matched the ring to the scarf to pull the look together.  If this bubble ring is out of your price range, this one is just $7.  I also like the bag for its slightly utilitarian styling and relaxed feel.

For the hair, because the outfit has a scarf, I would wear it up in a soft undo.  For the makeup, I would choose a sheer lip color and pink cheek with a healthy application of black liquid liner.

I love the idea of a pleated skirt with a jacket, but it never looks right. Am I doing it wrong? Is it just the wrong shape for me? maybe it’s meant for those with slim hips? Do you have any tips? a more shrunken jacket?

I find it works best for me with a jacket with a very defined waist (i.e. a peplum) or a cropped blazer. I find that when I wear it with my more traditional blazers it reminds me a little to much of high school uniforms that I’ve otherwise tried to block out, haha!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
