10th Commandment: December 20

Dec 20, 2012

It seems impossible, since it isn’t even Christmas, but I’m beginning to think about clothes for spring.  I know, I know.  But the bottom line is that, like many of you, I can’t afford to spend a significant amount of money on seasonal pieces. If I’m buying anywhere other than H&M, unless it’s a sweater, I need to make sure the item is seasonless or close to it.

J.Crew Chiffon Dot Top ($128 + 30% off with code CELEBRATE)

This ivory chiffon top with a dot texture is as close infinitely wearable as you can get.  You can wear it with tights and a pencil skirt in the winter, or with jeans and a chunky sweater.  In the warmer weather, you can wear it with bright skinny pants or a miniskirt and sandals.  (The top also comes in navy.)

Check back at 1:00PM for Two Ways to wear this top.

Need something less expensive?  This Dorothy Perkins blouse has a lovely, but not overwhelming, bow detail for $44.  And this gauzy chiffon top from Forever 21 comes in ivory and raisin for under-$20.

I thought about buying this top but the keyhole in the front throws me off. Would you wear a cami underneath?

  2. Jess says:

I have a bra that dips way down in the front so you can wear shirts that are lower cut or ones with keyholes. I think the surprise skin showing from this shirt would be a nice touch, and perhaps the cami would ruin the effect?

  3. Belle says:

Amanda-I would wear an ivory or nude cami, yes.

  4. JCC says:

Ooh, looking forward to this. I'm using some of my holiday vacation to do some outfit planning for spring and summer, so you're not crazy – this is timely! xoxo

  5. RG says:

Definitely need a cami anyway. I tried the navy, and it was sheer enough to warrant an underlayer, so I would say the same goes for the Ivory.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
