BPGP: GoSmile Tooth Whitening Kit

Aug 28, 2012

I have a confession to make: I drink a lot of diet wild cherry soda, black tea, iced tea and blackberry-pomegranate juice.  Recently, I noticed that these beverages are wreaking havoc on the whiteness of my smile.  And since my Parents paid a lot of money so that I could have perfect, straight teeth (I had silver caps until I was eight, then braces until I was 16.), I decided that I should try to whiten them.

I purchased the $65 Crest Whitestrips, and they helped a bit, but my teeth were still dingy-looking and SUPER sensitive afterwards.  So when a friend suggested the GoSmile Whitening Light System ($198, use promo FallG2G to bring it down to $158), I decided to give it a try.

The process for using the whitening system is a bit laborious compared to the ease of a drugstore whitestrip.  First, you crack one of the ampoules and rub the spongy end across your teeth to distribute the whitening liquid.  Then, you place the light machine into your mouth–it fits a bit like a mouth guard–and turn it on.  And then, you sit there for 10 minutes drooling on yourself–glamorous, I know.

You repeat this process two more times, for a total of 30 minutes of whitening.

The GoSmile system is different from other whiteners I’ve tried in two ways: 1) it didn’t make my teeth more sensitive to hot and cold and 2) it actually works.

The whitening chart GoSmile provides says that teeth can become eight shades whiter after just one use.  For me, it was more like four shades, but it was still visibly whiter.  And according to the chart, they will only get whiter as I continue to use the product. (There are four treatments in the kit, I would recommend one per week for a month.)

As for the downsides, they were minimal.  My hand got a little tired from holding the whitening light in my mouth for half-an-hour, no big deal.  And having to clean saliva from the device and drooling a bit was a little gross, so I’d recommend using the device when no one is around.

I loved this product.  It whitened my teeth as promised.  It didn’t make my teeth more sensitive.  And for days afterward, my teeth felt unbelievably smooth and clean (A friend who also used the product thinks the light may kill plaque bacteria, but I can’t say for sure.).  This product was cheaper than a professional whitening, but very effective.  It’s one of the best purchases I’ve made in awhile.

Thanks for the recommendation- I use Whitestrips on occasion (I have a weakness for coffee) but I feel like you have to use them almost twice a day to see any kind of results and I don't have the patience for that kind of commitment. I will definitely give this a try!

  2. Unfortunately these didn't whiten my teeth very much at all, though I agree that they don't sensitize your teeth. The cheap drugstore ones work best on me. Your post makes me think I may just need to give it another round though…mhhh

To me that seems like a lot of money to fork out. I have no experience with whitening to be honest but am wondering why you don't just have your teeth professionally cleaned at the dentist's? It's cheaper (about 80 Euros/100 Dollars here in Europe, probably not more expensive in the US?) and a professional does it for you. I've always been happy with the result.

  4. Belle says:

B: Having your teeth cleaned doesn't whiten the enamel, it just removes surface grime. A professional whitening can cost upwards of $500+, so having them whitened 8 shades for just over $150 is actually a decent deal.

Parker: The ampoules alone worked okay for me, but adding the light made a huge difference.

I will definitely check this out…. especially since I just looked on Amazon, and it's only $97!

Thanks for the review, Belle! The color of my teeth is good but not great. I've heard good things about this, but your review means a lot more than the others. I'm going to give it a shot.

One of my issues with forking over so much money for professional whitening is that if I keep drinking dark drinks (and I will), the stains will just come back. I think I prefer a system that requires more time but allows me to maintain the results.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
