Two Ways: Knit Striped Blazer

Jun 19, 2012

Blazer: Factory Knit Stripe Blazer (J.Crew, $94.50)

From Left, Earrings: Knot Earrings (similar, $24) Ring: Red Stone Ring ($79) Bag:Full Course Load Tote ($85) Shoes: Ivanka Trump Cleor Pump ($120) Top: Scarf Neck Top ($30) Skirt: Red Pencil Skirt (similar, $23)

From Right, Earrings: Adia Kibur Hoops ($15) Ring: Lola Quartz Ring ($135) Bag: Edie Purse ($238) Shoes: Aldo Brendle Sandals ($21) Top: Reiss Nellie Tee ($81) Jeans: AE Skinny Jean ($45)

Polyvore Set Here.

For the Office. If you wanted to go the safer route, you could pair this blazer with navy or white separates.  But I prefer this red pencil to standard navy.  Yes, it’s a little bit nautical, but it’s not like you’re wearing an anchor on your lapel.

Because there is a lot of color and pattern happening with the clothes, I wanted to keep the accessories minimal.  I like these knot earrings because they’re simple but with a little something.  The red ring helps pull the outfit together.  And the tan shoes and tote bag bring a little style to the party without serving as a distraction.

For the hair, I would wear it in a ponytail with the hair wrapped around the elastic.  It makes a ponytail look less “I’m going to the gym,” and more “I’m going to the office.”  For the makeup, a red pedicure and a sheer red lip tint with a bit of black eye liner should do the trick.

For Casual Friday. Yipes, stripes! (On a related note, do they sell Fruit Stripe gum anymore? I used to love that stuff.)  Mixing stripes can be a little tricky.  This combination works because the pink striped tee has a wider, reverse stripe and the jacket has a standard width navy stripe on a white field.  I would have preferred the stripes on the top to be even wider, but I couldn’t find what I was looking for on Polyvore.

I wanted the accessories to add a shot of color without hijacking the look, so I decided to use the azure ring and bag.  A simple sandal and hoop earring round out this look.

For the hair, I would do a braided or twisted updo.  For the makeup, I would choose a pop of bright blush, a lightly pink lip and taupe eye shadow.

Just so you know, the jacket is an extra 30% off right now. I know because it's getting shipped to me soon.

Hmm…I usually love your 'Two Ways' pairings but these are lacking. Yes, the first look screams nautical, almost cartoonish. Actually my visceral reaction to the first look was an immediate 'I hate it'. The second is a hodge-podge with no unifying color. Individually, I like the pieces (from the second look), just not together. That being said, this is only the one in a billion times you've been off so who cares! 🙂

I really like both of these outfits – I would wear them in a heartbeat if I had all the similar items.

Admittedly, mixing stripes makes me a little nervous but I'm a newbie in these matters.

Also, yes, they do still make Fruit Stripe! I happened to get home at the same time as my neighbor, and noticed that he was carrying a pack of it, zebra and all.

  5. gingerr says:

I have a similar jacket and have been wishing I could find a striped shirt where the stripes are vertical.

    gingerr: What about chevrons instead?

  7. kat says:

I just got a similar jacket from Lands End so I was psyched to see this feature. I've seen a lot of bold pencil skirts this summer and the jacket could go well with a bright yellow or pink IMHO. I was thinking of throwing it on top of a light grey dress.

They actually do sell Fruit Stripe! I spotted it (and snapped a pack up) at Paper Source in Georgetown.
And it was just like i remembered it – super sweet for ten seconds until the flavor was gone.

Thank you! I finally have an idea of how to wear a similar blazer that's been in my closet for months.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
