10th Commandment: May 2

May 2, 2012

I bought a nude blouse last year from The Outnet, and I’m surprirsed by how much wear it gets.  I love it. It’s one of my favorite purchases.

Elected Official

3.1 Phillip Lim Embellished Blouse (Net-a-Porter, $450)

Hill Staffer

Malene Birger Isalla Shirt (Net-a-Porter, $295)

A bit more expensive than a typical staffer item, however, my blouse is from this designger.  If you want something similar in a price point under-$200 Vince has a placket blouse available on Shopbop for $178.

Unpaid Intern

Drop Collar Blouse (ASOS, $54)

Belle, as someone with blonde (well more naturally strawberry blonde) hair with a slight suntan and freckles I've always been afraid of a nude blouse because I hear horror stories of how it's going to wash me out and I'll end up looking 'omg horrible' … Do you have any tricks for picking the right shade of nude so I don't look disastrously monochromatic or washed out

I am obsessed with that Malene Birger shirt that you posted a while back – the green tie-neck one – but it is out of my price range. Do you know of anything similar that is cheaper? I liked the heftiness of the bow in particular, as well as the color. I don't like the little flimsy tie-neck blouses! Thanks!

  3. Chloe says:

So here's a Q for you, Belle … I am Asian, but of the darker-skinned (think Fillipino/Cambodian) and wondering if I can pull off a nude blouse considering well, it's obviously not that close to my actual skin tone. I usually go for a crisp white blouse instead. Love the look though. Thoughts?

  4. Alli says:

Looks like my last post was deleted… basically, how do you wear a sheer blouse like this to work? I have a great cream-colored silk blouse that does nothing to hide my bra; does it have to be worn with a jacket or a camisole? Those two options take away from the shirt itself, unfortunately.

  5. Belle says:

Alli- It wasn't deleted. I don't delete. Something is up with the comments, there are even times when it gives me an “unable to post” message. I've complained til I'm blue, but it still happens.

I wear a nude cami and a strapless bra.

  6. Ellen says:

I bought that nude blouse from the Outnet that you featured last year and am obsessed with it. I think you had it in a post about what to wear when traveling (I too hate how sloppy people look on planes, trains, etc.) A blouse like this is perfect for summer travel because it has sleeves but is not hot.

  7. Belle says:

Chloe: I don't think having a darker skin tone should b a problem at all. It's still a nice color regardless.

Ellen: Unfortunately, I think this color might be out of the running for someone with your complexion. But you never know, if you got some bright jewelry or a scarf so you'd have some color near your face, it could work.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
