Two Ways: Silk Floral Tee

Apr 3, 2012

Top: Pretty Blossom Tee (TopShop, $72)

From the Left, Bracelet: Green Bangle Bracelet ($9) Handbag: J.Crew Edie Purse ($238) Shoe: Kors Glitter Patent Pump ($195) Earrings: Filigree Earrings ($35) Belt: Isabella Oliver Belt ($84) Skirt: Superfine Cotton Pencil Skirt ($98)

From the Right, Earrings: Kors Turquoise Hoops ($95)  Bracelet: Wide Geometric Cuff ($12) Handbag: Tignanello Cross Body ($115) Shoes: Nine West Berhta ($79) Shirt: AE Chambray Shirt ($40) Jeans: J.Crew Toothpick Jeans ($125)

For Casual Monday. This look is one step above Casual Friday, one step below office attire.  If you added a belted cardigan or a white blazer, however, you could wear it on a regular warm weather work day.  I’d also choose stud earrings at switch out the purse for something more neutral.

Mixing a colored-pencil skirt with a floral blouse is a crisp and feminine look for spring.  Add nude pumps to lengthen the leg line, and a bright bag for a little something extra.  This outfit would also be good for a day when you had a post-work date.

For the makeup, I would resist the temptation to add more color to your face.  A light blush and a neutral eye will be more than enough.  And for the hair, I would wear it down and loosely waved with a bit of volume at the crown.

For a Spring Trip.  As you know, I like to travel in style.  Nothing irks me more than the huddled airport masses clad in sweatpants and Uggs and 2pm in the afternoon.  Getting on an airplane does not mean that I have to check my sense of style and self-respect with my luggage.

Here, I paired a chambray shirt with the floral blouse to take a bit of the frilly out of the print.  Then, I took it up a notch with colored denim. I actually prefer this berry color from Target ($23), but a word of advice, they run small.  I usually take a juniors 7 (sz 4), but I ended up needing a juniors 9.

If you’re opposed to the color, you can wear dark wash denim with the lighter chambray shirt and still not be faux pas.  Or you could switch it out for a skinny ankle trouser and wear this as a Casual Friday look.

For the hair, I would recommend up in a fun, bouncy pony tail or half up-half down.  For the makeup, a berry lip stain and pale pink nails.

Have you done a post on how to do denim on denim correctly? Not sure how I feel about that trend, so would be interested to see what kind of outfits you'd put together!

Love this pink pants. I think these are just what I need, to help build up my courage to red pants.

    Ok, I NEED those pumps!

Does the t shirt go over or under the button down?

    Where are the flats from?

Chloe – I think the trick with denim on denim is to make sure your denims are different colors. Joutfits are one of my favorite things (when they're done right). I think the safest thing you can do is what Belle did above with the colored jean and chambray shirt because then the denim isn't overwhelming. You can also go a little more conservative with a black or white jean and chambray shirt. Or you can really commit to it and go for full-on blue as long as the shades are significantly different.

Just for fun, here's a site that I love (it's too bad they don't post anymore) that catalogs (and critiques) both good and really bad joutfits: https://latfjoutfit.tumblr.com/ (don't open this at work because there's an f-bomb at the top of the page)

Just FYI on the Berhta flats from Nine West- they're comfy and stylish (go with a lot of work and casual outfits), but the bottom of the shoes is coated in a very cheap rubber that starts to peel off quickly, for me it only took a few days of walking 20 minutes to work. If anyone has an alternative suggestion for a similarly priced flat that would be great- otherwise I'm keeping these in my closet for the occasions when I don't have to do a lot of walking.

    Valerie,

I've had good luck with Steve Madden's “Heaven” flat: https://www.dsw.com/shoe/sm+women%27s+heaven+patent+flat?prodId=dsw12prod1540008&category=cat20068

I'd love to hear other people's suggestions, though.

Valerie: Damn. I haven't been wearing the pair I bought as much as usual, but I'll be on the lookout for that.

Anon: Chloe's advice is spot on. You need to do different colored denims, easiest with a color or white. If you're going to mix washed denims (traditional blues), you have to do dark with light. Even then, it's not a look that I love. But I think with a shirt over it, it is more doable.
