Two Ways: Optic Print Orange Blouse

Feb 21, 2012

Blouse: Optic Print Blouse (Anthropologie, $148)

From the Left, Ring: Resin Ring ($75) Bag: Ivanka Trump Rose Tote ($175) Shoe: Via Spiga Jessica Pump ($130) Blazer: 1035 Cotton Blazer ($178) Pants: Rachel Zoe Flare Pant ($275)

From the Right, Earrings: Sailor Knot Hoops ($68) Bag: Marc Jacobs Petal Bag ($440) Shoe: Jayne T-Strap Flat ($198) Sweater: Embrace It Cardigan ($63) Pants: Tibi Chambray Trouser ($285)

For the Office.  I don’t often wear mixed separates instead of a suit, but I like navy and white/ivory together.  Here, I mixed white and navy to tone down the brightness and print of the orange blouse.  For this outfit, I prefer pants, but you could also do a skirt.  And if you don’t like wearing white on the bottom, you could reverse it and wear white on top.

With white and navy, I prefer to do brown or grey separates.  Here, I did a chocolate shoe and a tan bag.  You could also do a nude shoe in the summertime.  For jewelry, I like the orange ring to pull the look together and would wear simple gold earrings.

For the hair, I would wear the hair up in a twist or a bun.  For the makeup, I would wear a sheer rose lip and a light pink cheek with brown eyeliner and taupe shadow.  I’d also paint my nails a pale gold.

For the Weekend.  This outfit is perfect for weekend errands, a casual brunch or travel.  It’s a great transition outfit between winter and spring.

The chambray jeans are incredibly soft and comfortable and the light fabric makes them the perfect casual warm weather jean.  Layer on a slightly boxy cardigan for that casual 1970s feel.  If you want to, you could belt the cardigan, but I prefer to leave it open.

For the accessories, I stuck to a palette of neutrals, but chose pieces with a little whimsy.  The hoop earrings have a delicate knot shape.  The bag has the bird plates with a bold cognac leather.  And the t-strap shoes are very on trend right now.

The hair for this outfit should be casual, I would do a messy braid similar to this one.  If you’re hair isn’t long enough to braid, I would reccomend messy waves, think bed head.  For the makeup, I would do a sheer red or coral lip.  I would also smudge out the eyeliner for a slightly smoldering look.

I prefer to wear bright, printed blouses with neutrals.  If you’d like to pump it up a bit, I would reccomend a green pencil skirt or a cobalt blue piece.  I also thought this blouse could look good under a v-neck dress.

Belle: You mention you don't often substitute separates for a suit. Is that more of a personal style preference, or do you feel that separates don't carry the same gravitas as a matching suit? I've heard justifications for both, but I wondered where you stood 🙂

It's just a preference of mine.

I love this work outfit. I have all of the pieces except the blouse, so you may have just ruined my resolve to not shop this month.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
