2011 Gift Guide: For Gentlemen

Dec 8, 2011

I always struggle to find gifts for guys. They’re so tough to shop for because most guys are happy with a simple, quality gift. So let’s oblige them, shall we?

Mulberry Clover Cufflinks ($130). Cufflinks are a timeless gift for the professional man. These silver clovers by English clothier Mulberry are the perfect mix of whimsy and elegance. For the more politically minded, you can find them in Democrat and Republican themes.

Brooks Brothers Lambswool Scarf ($60). A warm, classic scarf is perfect for the fashion forward man (or the man who needs a small boost in the fashion forward department). This striped scarf is neutral enough to match any overcoat, and bridges the gap between casual and dressy.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($36). I’m told that for under $50, this is an excellent scotch. I’m also told that if you want something extra special the Laphroaig aged 18 years is especially good ($80).

Belkin Low-Profile USB Charger ($5). Does the man in your life own an iPhone, iPad or other USB charged device? Then, you need this car charger. It’s great for long car trips and perfect for frequent talkers.

As for other gifts, most of the gentlemen I know are obsessed with leather goods from an American company called Col. Littleton. The items are a bit pricey, but they’re well-crafted and perfect for Dads.

If you have any ideas for other gifts for boyfriends, husbands, brothers or Dads, leave them in the comments. I’m a bit out of practice buying for men as my Father only wants antiques and my Brother only wants ammunition.

For the guy who frequently wears, and is prone to losing his cuff links (*cough, cough, looking directly at my boyfriend), may I suggest the Brooks Brothers french knots… they're only about $10/pair and come in lots of fun colors so you can include ones for his favorite sports teams or alma mater.

A year or two ago, I book marked a website that had really nice men's bowties. They were fairly pricey – in the $80 to $100 range, but they were beautiful. I have lost the book mark and I wondered if anyone knows what I'm talking about.

I loved the gift guide that putiton.com did a little while ago, so if anyone needs more tips you can check that out 🙂

    Hi Belle et al –

Although I'm a chick, I know my way around whisky. The Laphroig is a very, very smoky whisky that few (some, but few) enjoy if they haven't built the pallette for it. Think, maybe instead, of the Balvenie doublewood, a Macallan, the Glenrothes, even an Auchentoshen for those who don't normally drink Scotch… you can just go into the whisky store and ask for something 'in the middle of the map' or smooth – that usually means a Speyside or lowlands whisky.

    Just FWIW. Merry Christmas!

    -Jay

Thanks. I drink Bourbon, so I'm sort of anti-Scotch.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
