Belle's Weekly Reading: Earth, Wind and Fire Edition

Sep 1, 2011

When I was in college, my bestie would play this song at all of his parties.  And until you heard it, the evening really hadn’t begun.  I wait for September 1st all year just so I have a reason to listen to it at full volume.

Mr. Kate. Geri Hirsch at Because I’m Addicted has great taste.  A while back, she featured the whimsical, trendy-but-accessible jewelry of Mr. Kate.com, and I fell in love.  I am especially enamored with the little rings and the bolt necklaces in rose gold.

Chocoholic. Black is my go-to neutral for the colder months of Fall and Winter, but Coco + Kelley’s post on the glories of chocolate brown has me reconsidering that decision.  Maybe I’ll give this hue a try on my nails and see how I like it.

Half-Moons.  Speaking of nails, I have resolved this Fall to start painting mine more frequently.  I keep my pedi perfect, but sometimes the mani gets lost in the shuffle.  (Plus, do you know how many chips I get typing on a Blackberry?)

I’ve been collecting ideas, and am in love with the shades in Glitter Guide’s Fall nail trend board.  Th Deborah Lippman navy sparkle polish is to.die.for.

I’m also warming up to the 1920s-inspired half moons, where you paint the bottom of the nail one shade and the top another.  The Beauty Department created an awesome look mixing silver and navy polishes.  It’s super easy, and looks really chic.

The Kaiser. Karl Lagerfeld’s designer collaboration with Macy’s is finally on sale and Mizhattan has the scoop.  The pieces vary widely from verging-on-dominatrix to sweetly feminine.  There’s certainly something for everyone.

No Capes.  Say the phrase, “I just bought a poncho,” and you’re likely to raise a few eyebrows.  But Ugly Betty references aside, Anh at 9 to 5 Chic shows you how to wear this Fall’s knit ponchos and short capes with style.  That’s right, ponchos can be stylish.

30 Days Has September. It’s easy to fall into a rut with your hairstyle.  Luckily, Refinery29 just finished a month of hairstyles that incorporates all types of hair and hairdos.  The calendar is sure to spark a few ideas for how to jazz up your coif this Fall.

I think it would look really cool to do a half-moon with a clear matte polish or a lighter shade in the same color family.

Nora Ephron was right: I feel bad about my neck. As I move through my forties, the creases have turned into chasms. The skin sags like a pair of sweatpants with aging elastic. It’s not great. But it’s just a natural part of getting older. Over the past year, it feels like I’ve tried every […]
