Three Ways: Short Sleeve Polka-Dot Blouse

Polyvore Set Here.

A loose-fitting blouse looks chic with a snug-fitting pencil skirt.  I like the simplicity of this dotted blouse from Splendid, but it would look best on someone with a bit of a bust and not as lovely on a pear shaped person.

I added a belt to define the waist.  It should be worn covering the band of the skirt and just overlapping slightly onto the blouse.  You can buckle it in either the front or the back.  Throw on a versatile, beige shoe and a red purse and you’re all set.

For a flirty Summer look, pair a pleated white skirt with the blouse.  You could add a belt in tan or red, but I decided to pair it with a long, turquoise necklace.

I’m still obsessing about envelope clutches.  So here, I added a green one to coordinate but not match the necklace and blouse.

Lastly, I love these shoes.  They’re neutral but don’t fade into the background.  And if you have a thicker ankle (cankles, if you want to be rude), the thicker block heel will help balance it out.

Colored pants are everywhere this Fall and pre-Fall.  While I’m looking forward to trying on a pair of fuschia ones from J.Crew, red is a very popular color.

These ankle-length trousers and nude wedges make this trend a bit more accessible for those bold enough to try it.  And the chain clutch and gold earrings add a bit more sass.

Colored pants aren’t for everyone, but it’s free to try them on at the store.  So give them a whirl, and see if they’re for you.

I'm really drawn to the bright pants that are popping up now and I'm glad to see a way to wear them – I was stumped, but think that I might go pick up a pair now.

  2. E says:

Love the colored pants! What a great way to pair everything!

  3. I am pretty sure the third set includes the Rebecca Minkoff Mac Clutch, and I am officially psyched it exists in blue. Cute!

  4. CathyG says:

Are those bright pants work appropriate? They are absolutely adorable, but I'm wondering how I can weasle them into my professional wardrobe..

  5. Lauren says:

Yes! Bright pants to work is a go. I have my eye on a pair at J. Crew.

  6. norwegianette says:

I have to disagree that the top would be appropriate for someone with a bigger bust; with that neckline, it would make your bust look way bigger and (excuse the bluntness) saggier. Moderate scoop, square necks and moderate v-necks are the way to go if you have a bigger bust (trust me, I've learned this the hard way), because they sort of cut that part of you in half so it doesn't look so big.

  7. Mary says:

What slip would you recommend with the white skirt in the middle outfit? I have a similar skirt but haven't been able to wear in public secondary to a certain sheerness in the right light…

  8. Belle says:

Well, you have two choices: You can take the skirt to a tailor and have a liner put in or you can buy a mini-skirt length slip in satin or nylon. For versatility, I would probably recommend the nude slip from Commando that they sell at Nordstrom.

  9. Christine says:

Great post – I'm a big fan of both work looks! I've noticed you seem to preach the value of throwing on a belt – big or small- for just about any outfit. While I agree it can look great on those with the appropriate body type (i.e. on the taller and slender side), I think there should be some warning for those who think the belted-waist is the universal “go-to” solution for all body types. It's definitely not.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
