Three Ways: Classic White Shirt

I occasionally wear sleeveless shells like they’re vests.  It’s a simple way to add texture to an outfit.  Not when it’s 103 degrees outside, but you get the idea.  Here I layered a striped and subtly-sequined knit over the classic white shirt.  I paired it with a textured, blue suit for the conservative work environment.

I like this suit because tab front pants are much more flattering on a ladies who have a little extra around the middle.  Unlike pants with a center hook and eye, they don’t pooch out and emphasize the bump.

Add a simple purse and a bold, red shoe (or grey/beige if you’re less flashy) to complete the look.  Plus, you could mix in silver or gold jewelry or if you skip the red shoes, turquoise or emerald jewels.

Breezy, light fabric’s are perfect for morning trips to the Farmer’s Market.  With this outfit, you could tie the shirt ala Cupcakes and Cashmere, but if the mid-90s knot isn’t your thing, just loosely tuck it into the skirt.  Add a simple sandal and a big, raffia bag and you’re all set to spend $7 on strawberries and $13 on arugula.

I also like the way the bracelets coordinate with the green skirt and the natural elements of the outfit.

This skirt is billed as “tweed” on the J.CREW website.  Having seen it in person, it is really more like a smocked cotton, so not as stifling as a tweed skirt would be in July.  Tuck in your crisply-irone white shirt and add a bib necklace in a coordinating hot pink color and you’re set.

I also added a pale gold bag and a cool beige heel to lift the outfit a bit.  Seriously, how cute are those shoes?

You are amazing. I am completely and totally in love with all three outfits . . . and I DESPISE white button up shirts.
that is real talent, my friend!

I love wearing button-front shirts, but am confused about how to wear statement necklaces with them. I've seen necklaces worn under the collar like a necktie, but this seems to pull the collar down and look too much like a necktie. Wearing the necklace completely inside the shirt covers up most of it. And then there's the hybrid – wearing the necklace against the back of the neck, but draped over the shirt in front. This seems to squish the placket of the shirt in a funky way. Belle, please help me master the shirt/necklace combination!

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
