It's Time for a Lingerie Intervention

Apr 20, 2010

While you’ve probably been wearing a bra since you were in middle school, the cold hard truth is that you have probably been wearing the wrong bra.  In fact, seventy-percent of American women are wearing the wrong bra.  And believe me, it shows.

Every day, I walk the halls of Capitol Hill and am confronted by drooping breasts, breasts that are to close together, straps that fall down, and the worst sin of all, bras that augment back fat.  Your underpinnings are supposed to help the girls stand at attention, but too many of them are falling down on the job.  Some of you are even wearing bras that are five sizes too small.  Thus, it’s time for an intervention.

Recently, my favorite lingerie shop, Coup de Foudre (roughly translated from the French to mean goodbye sagging mammaries), added a new feature to their website that allows you to book a free 30-minute bra makeover with one of Coup de Foudre’s specialists.  If you’ve ever seen the Oprah show segment where the Bra Whisperer coaxes women into the proper underpinnings and miraculously changes their body shape, you should know that this experience will be similarly life changing.

Plus, the owner is French and who knows lacy under things better than the French?

If you’re modest or don’t live in D.C., the Coup de Foudre website has plenty of helpful tips on how to find the perfect bra for you.  These include a perfect fit checklist and a handy calculator that will help you select the perfect size for you.  There’s also a description of how the perfect bra should fit (ie the straps should not slip and the band shouldn’t cut into the skin).

Some people were put on this Earth to do great things, Valerie was put on this Earth to ensure that women can hold their heads and their breasts up high.  So book your 30-minute bra fitting today, and treat yourself to a bra that you can proud to wear.

Nordstrom also does free bra fittings in their lingerie department.

  2. Daniela says:

Whatever you do, don’t go into Victoria Secret for a bra fitting. I went to the one in the Georgetown underground mall, it was a horrible experience. The woman who was supposed to help me could not have looked less thrilled when I asked for a bra fitting. During the bra fitting, she was super rude. I ended up buying nothing and getting some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream to comfort myself instead.

    “bra whisperer” –Ha! Well played.

  4. Becky says:

Wow, I had no idea about this store! And what prefect timing — I need to find the right bra for my wedding dress, after striking out on online purchases and scouring department stores. I’ve already made an appointment. Thank you!

  5. Oh, it’s like you answered my prayers. My best friend just went to a store like this in NYC; I’ve been dying to find one in DC. I even allotted part of my tax return to NICE new bras. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

This place is honestly wonderful. The week before I tried this place I was sized as a 36C at Victoria’s Secret. When I went here, they sized me as a 32F and it made a huge difference. Not only does my clothing fit better, I feel like I look better and I am more self-confident. The staff was so helpful and considerate. This is a must visit.

  7. EAC says:

Also, if you have one in your area, My Intimacy is wonderful. Once I started wearing the right size bra, it made a world of difference. And ladies please, if you go for a fitting, don’t argue with your fitter about how you KNOW what size you should be wearing. Believe me, you probably don’t.

  8. Ms. T. says:

The bigger issue for me is VERY few places, even boutiques, sell bras my size- 28DD. I’ve been fitted before at a boutique in Chicago and it totally changed my shape. Now if only I could find a local DC retailer who sells bras in my size.

  9. EAC says:

Ms T., just order from figleaves.com or herroom.com.. Freshpair.com may also carry your size.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
