Gift Guide: Proper Topper

Dec 20, 2010

With only four days left until Christmas Eve, this is the last day that you can purchase a gift and have it to the recipient on time.  Unless, of course, you like trading your first born to the powers that be at Fed-Ex for overnight shipping.  Who knew mailing one box could be so expensive?

Anyway, because I know that some of you procrastinators still have gifts to buy, I thought that I would ask a few local retailers for their suggestions.  Today’s featured shop?  Proper Topper.

Box of 5 Magic Tricks ($14): The gift for the mischievous boy or the man who has everything. A bit of nostalgia in a box—harmless, clean fun for a steal!

Carolina Amato fingerless gloves, slouch beanie, and infinity scarf ($38): A cozy and stylish accessory trio—warm and soft (and the gloves keep your hands free for holiday-texting). [also featured on our blog!]

Hugh & Crye handmade ties ($45): Simple and elegant limited-edition ties from D.C. locals Hugh & Crye.

Tribeca Soft Clutch ($128): A beautiful splurge—supple leather, multi-functionality, wraps up in a cinch for under-Christmas-tree placement… [also featured on our blog]

A.V. Max bib necklace ($110): For her post-holiday soirees.

To purchase any of these gifts, or to choose another lovely present, visit Proper Topper’s Dupont circle location at 1350 Connecticut Ave NW.  They’re open Monday-Friday 10AM to 9PM.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
