A Serious Case Hair Envy

Apr 14, 2010

Partially due to the local weather and partially due to the stressful nature of my career, I have spent the last five years locked in a vicious hair cycle.  I cut it off, and immediately decide that I want to grow it out.  It grows into that awkward mid-length, and I hack it off in frustration.  Two weeks later, I decide that that was a hasty decision and swear that I’m going to grow it out.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

Miss M watched this cycle of follicular doom for almost a decade when she finally put her foot down last winter, “Stop cutting your hair, you look like a soccer-Mom who visits Supercuts. (Ouch.) And you would be so friggin hot with long hair.”  (That’s her way of saying sorry.)

Thus, I’ve spent the last fifteen-months trying to grow out my hair.

Given the weather conditions in D.C., it has not been easy to resist the overwhelming desire to shave my head and rock the Sinead O’Connor-look.  Some days, I wonder if cutting it all off ala Ginnifer Goodwin wouldn’t be the better option, but knowing that Miss M would shoot me on sight has prevented that plan from coming to fruition.

I fantasize daily about to giving up and chopping eight inches off of my hair, only hope (and a hairdresser who refuses to cut it because she knows I will regret it) has stopped me. But after seeing the incredibly sexy and fun hairdo that Glee’s Lea Michele was rocking on the red carpet last night, I am more determined than ever to keep up the good fight.

A shoulder length bob may be easier, but long layers with sultry bangs is better.  If only hair grew faster.

I’m with you! I chopped my hair into a Victoria Beckham bob 2 years ago and the road back to long hair continues to be slow and painful…

  2. JD says:

Have you tried Moroccan oil? It really helps – also maybe some flaxeed oil pills – they are great for hair and nail grow!

  3. Belle says:

I just started using Argan Oil on my hair, and I’m starting vitamins soon. Anything to speed it up.

Dayum, that IS some gorgeous hair. So is Salma Hayek’s – it’s the same kind of dark, uber-glossy mane. Covet. I sometimes dream of lopping it all off and getting a cute pixie cut, ever since Carey Mulligan’s adorableness hit the scene – hey, it also worked for Audrey Hepburn! – but I’m a little too freaked out to actually do it. And I am someone who has historically not been afraid of haircuts. Instead I’m focusing on healthy fats and minimal heat processing, and I comb olive oil through my hair before shampooing (it works, just don’t put it on your roots).

I have hair about as long as Lea Michele and I have been fighting the urge to cut it off recently just because I want a change…however I hate getting even just an inch trimmed off so I keep trying to fight the urge because it is only a good idea in theory!

  6. Belle says:

Bianca, if you need change maybe you could try a body wave or a new hair color instead?

  7. Bianca says:

Thanks for the ideas but I have black curly hair…I just make it look straight like hers! Color is not a good option for dark hair I dont recommend it to anyone, my few attempts when I was younger turned orange…I love my hair! Maybe I’ll try new eye shadow for change instead of the horror that would be my break down in the salon!

  8. Rachel says:

I’ve been rocking a pixie cut for about three years now. I’ll go through phases where I attempt to grow it out but then get frustrated and cut it off again. Every time I cut it though, most of the people around me say, “Thank God! You look so much better with short hair.” So, I’m going to keep rocking the pixie. Super short hair isn’t for everyone, but I’ve never been that attached to my hair, and frankly, it looks good on me.

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
