Modern Wiggle Dresses for Work

Feb 22, 2010

In the middle of the 20th Century, many women started dressing to emulate celebrity icon Marilyn Monroe.  One of Monroe’s signature looks was a tight fitting sheath known as the wiggle dress.  The dress was so named because the snug fit forced women to take smaller steps causing them to wiggle when they walked.  While modern dresses usually feature a back vent to allow for more movement, these dresses are a good way to bring sexy back to your work wardrobe.

Black Halo Jackie O Dress (Revolve, $379)

I love how these are sexy and feminine, yet work appropriate all at the same time. Great post!

I was going to ask where the wiggle came from but I was only looking at the photos at the time. almost forgot to read what you wrote…wiggle…I get it now.

I love the sheath style and have been too afraid to wear a more fitted one to work so thanks for permission! Um, but, how fitted is too fitted for a grown up job if one has a rump out of a rap video?

Dresses should skim the body. If your dress or skirt wrinkles or puckers then it is too tight. To test for tightness, grab the side seams and twist the skirt, if it won’t move easily it is too tight.
