Three Ways: Plaid for Days

Sep 9, 2026

If fall 2026 fashion could be summed up in one word, it would be plaid. Plaid for days. Casual, professional, pajama, plaid is just everywhere. Here are three outfits that bring the plaid.

Soccer Game. J.Crew Factory Plaid Coat // Spanx Authentic 360 Jeans // J.Crew Cashmere Sweater // Quince Hobo Bag // LL Bean Duck Boots // Quince Huggie Hoops

The season for standing outside in chilly weather has indeed returned, and with such a selection of gorgeous of plaid coats, this is the perfect use case for fall plaid. This cotton field jacket from J.Crew Factory was gifted to me and it is very chic especially for the price. I also like this light-colored barn jacket from BR and this spendier Barbour jacket in a gorgeous blue plaid. Or if you want a more versatile piece, wear an oversized blazer in a cool plaid.

Because you’ll be outside, the jacket is the star of the show. Underneath, you have a simple navy sweater and medium-wash jean. I talked yesterday about my love for these Spanx jeans, check it out if you missed it. Since we stand in a muddy field, I like these LL Bean boots that are great for wet weather without being rain boots. If you want a leather boot, these Naturalizer brown leather boots are a great option.

Finish the outfit with a bag that contrasts, but only slightly. This burgundy bag from Quince is a nice option. Cuyana also has a deep purple bag that’s very pretty. Dark green or rust would also be a great option here, both offer contrast but in a very complementary palette.

Zoom Call. Faherty Legend Plaid Shirt // Lands’ End Wide Leg Jeans // Cuyana Zip Top Tote // Ugg Short Boots // Evereve Vida Statement Earrings

If you like heavier material, Faherty makes the clothes for you. Every time I open up a package from them, I always notice the thickness and the quality of the fabrics. This plaid shirt it no exception. I love the mix of berry and navy for a softer plaid. Plus-size? I like this Universal Standard top. Want something more unique? Mint Velvet makes a very cool shirt with a dramatic neckline.

I finished up this outfit with a cream denim, so the look didn’t start to feel too Paul Bunyan. This pair is from Lands’ End so it comes in petite and plus. Madewell also make a nice light denim, which come in tall and petite.

The rest of the outfit is simple — a light blue bag with dark blue earrings. If you’re ever stressed about how to put a new piece into your wardrobe, especially if it has a print, just keep all the other pieces in the color family. It’s like Granimals for adults.

The Office. Rag & Bone Mercer Knit Jacket // Theory Wide Leg Trousers // Modern Citizen V-Neck Sleeveless Top // The Horse Clementine Bag // Naturalizer Slingbacks // Kate Spade Stud Earrings

For the office, I kept the look very traditional with a black and white plaid. This jacket from Rag & Bone runs small, so size up, but it is so chic on. Very tailored and modern. ASOS has a similar look in espresso and blue that is worth a look. For ease, I paired it with a simple black pant. Any wide or trouser cut pant will do. Just choose the ones you feel best in.

Let’s talk about this blouse — it’s from Modern Citizen and it is the perfect under blazer top. It comes in several colors, the material is a little thicker than what you would find at J.Crew. I love this top, and already bought my second color. A great professional staple.

As for accents, I wanted a simple, comfortable shoe, Naturalizer is always good for that. I also wanted a contrast color for the bag and the earrings, so I picked these Kate Spade earrings and went looking for a bag. This purse is from a brand called The Horse, if you haven’t heard of it yet, allow me to introduce you.

The Horse’s whole vibe is high quality leather, clean lines, designer look, mid-price. All of the bags are under-$500, they go on sale for under-$250. I have been looking at their large Daisy bag for a while, and the Lou bag I bought earlier this year is on sale. If you like good quality and mid-prices, this line is for you. It’s a bag that looks expensive but you won’t know who made it.
