Dressing in the late summer is so challenging. Fall clothes fill the shelves, but the weather is decidedly summery. This outfit mixes summer and fall to create a look that is fantastic all together, but still stylish without the sweater. Let’s go.
I love a trapeze dress for late summer. The cut is so far away from the body that the breeze can help keep you cool. It’s perfect for the days that you don’t feel great about your body or just want to be comfortable. Also, if you like your legs, this is a great way to wear a mini-dress that’s still on the modest side. Here’s how to remake this look from Pinterest.
The Dress. It’s fantastic when you find exactly the dress you’re looking for. English Factory is a great line for trendy pieces at a price point that doesn’t make your wallet cry. This dress comes in stark white and a softer ivory (this color is half-price). It’s swingy and cool and wonderful for summer.
I also found this navy dress while searching for the white version, and I bought it immediately. It’s a bit spendy, but I owned a similar dress in black and wore it until the hems frayed beyond repair. So the cost-per-wear will be on my side.
The Sweater. Any chunky, heavy, oatmeal covered sweater will do. Nordstrom is currently selling this sweater with Khaite-inspired details that is definitely going to sell out. I’ve seen it in person and it’s well-made and soft to the touch. And I like the haphazard way it’s tied around the shoulders in the inspo photo, it doesn’t seem too precious. If you’re bigger than size 10 or have broad shoulders, you might get a more faithful look with an oversized sweater for extra drape.
For an affordable option, this Abercrombie sweater is a great option. I bought two sweaters from that line last fall and found myself wearing them more than any other sweaters I own. This sweater is $75, and it probably won’t last two seasons, but while it’s great, it’s worth it.
The Shoes. The heels in the photo look like a very famous pair of Ralph Lauren slingbacks that they only made for one season, but that I search for on The Real Real constantly. In lieu of such beauty, I found these mule Sam Edelman’s with the fringe detail. You can wear them now with a dress or later with jeans. They’re super cute in person. If you prefer a heel, these Jeffrey Campbell shoes have a very similar look.
Accessories. I love the look of wearing gold bracelets (or silver, if that’s your preference) on both wrists. Here, I mixed this versatile Baublebar bangle bracelet with a cool, knotted style from COS, and a traditional Tory Burch watch. It’s a styled, high fashion look without the designer price.
Obviously, a small white bag is not the choice for working women and Moms everywhere. What am I carrying in that zipped up bucket? Not a lot. So I snapped up this faux leather BCBG bag instead. It has a cool style and fun details, while holding a bit more. I also love the look of this slouchy tote from Anthropologie, which comes in so many colors and is such a steal at $68.
Styling. Hair down is the move here. Hair up will take a breezy look and make it tight. I posted a mocha-rose lip color from Merit to get that perfect summer lip. I also added my new favorite bronzer from Morphe — $15 and it’s just bronze enough without being too orange or too shimmery.
If you want a body tan, I always like a mousse tanning product. I’ve tried so many, both purchased and gifted, and I always end up right back at St. Tropez paying the money out of pocket.
