My Favorite Buys for Less Spendy Skincare

Oct 1, 2024

Once upon a time, there was a girl. She was spry 28, with no mortgage, husband, child, or dog. Her time was her own, her money was her own, and she was blissfully happy spending copious amounts of it on pricey lotions and potions that promised to keep her young forever.

Now, that girl has morphed into a woman of 42, with a mortgage on an old house, a husband, two dogs (one with diabetes), a 401k, a crippling Starbucks habit, and a beloved daughter who eats berries like she pays for them herself. The serums and creams did not keep her young forever and she wishes every dollar of her late-20s skincare money was in the aforementioned 401k. But never fear, her need for affordable skincare that works as well or better than the spendy products of her youth has led her to this post.

Prequel Face Wash // I have written about this face wash before, several times, and I’m going to keep writing about it. The face wash is gentle, works well, doesn’t irritate my skin, doesn’t dry my skin, and the $18 bottle lasts forever. I started using the product in January and I bought my second bottle in early August. In September, I bought another bottle to keep in the shower, and I now use it as body wash. Plus, they carry it at Target now, so throw next time, I can throw it in with my daughter’s yogurt and banana restock.

Prequel Lucent-C Serum // I would like to have all of the money I ever spent on Skinceuticals back. All of it. This vitamin C-serum brightens, evens tone, and isn’t sticky. For under-$25, there isn’t a better quality c-serum on the market. Also available at Target.

The Inkey List Water Cream // While my aging skin needs moisture, it needs light moisture. The Inkey List is one of the best affordable skincare brands out there, so when I spotted their Niacinimide Water Cream for just $12, I snatched it up. It is an awesome daily moisturizer. Completely unscented (which is basically unheard of these days), my only complaint is that they need to make it in a bigger size.

Element Hypochlorous Acid Spray // Recently, I fell in love with Tower28’s Hypochlorous Acid spray. With a little spritz, this product reduces redness and treats acne. The only issue with the product was the price. So I was so excited to find this Element spray that does the same job for less than half the money.

Eos 24-Hour Body Lotion // My skin has changed so much in my 40s. The lotion I apply in the morning has evaporated by lunch. Until now. Eos makes a shea butter lotion that really does last all day without being heavy or greasy. It costs under-$10 and comes in a fragrance free option.

GrandeBrow Growth Serum // The only over-$50 product on this list, but still less than half the price of the name brand, GrandeBrow will regrow your brows. It has completely regrown mine. If your brows are looking sparse, spend $27 on the mini-size and use it every other day until it runs out. I promise you will see growth. If you over-plucked your brows in the early-aughts, this is the product for you.

If you have a favorite mid-price product, drop it in the comments.

What a great, informative round-up! This is super helpful. Thank you!

  2. Clara says:

I use one cream for face and body and am never disappointed: Eucerine Original Body Cream. Cheap, effective, unscented, and lasts all day. https://a.co/d/aPnb5VR

  3. Sam says:

Do you have to keep using the brow growth serum to maintain full brows or does one bottle give lasting results?

    • Belle says:

My friend says on lashes it’s continuous use, but on her brows (which are epic) she just uses it once a week to keep them up.

I wish your post would go viral for the benefit of the today’s 28 year olds and their 401ks.
It is silly to think – I had an app for tracking my continuous flow of online purchases from all over the internet, because it was too many to keep track of. No dress was ever so perfect that it stopped me from looking for more. No serum was ever the miracle cure.

What would a 55 year old tell us that we would wish to know now?

    • AnnM says:

Great comment! This 59-year-old would tell 28-year-olds to curb spending on the search for the holy grail of skin care, spend some of that money on travel, curb the obsession with “beauty,” and use 50+factor European sunscreen every damn day.

  5. Kellie says:

Are you using the EOS more than the Keihls?

    • Belle says:

I can’t justify buying the Creme de Corps unless it’s on sale, and my skin’s been so dry, I’m already out. So yes.

  6. AnnM says:

I’ve tried to pare down my routine while still including an effective Vit C serum in the morning. I’ve been very happy with Geek & Gorgeous – in terms of simplicity, price point, research, and delivery times. I split my year between Kansas City, Ireland, and Spain and it arrives quickly and effortlessly in all places.

    • Kellie says:

I’m also in KC and would love to know how you’re able to spent part of the year in Europe, if you’re comfortable sharing! I loved Spain. My husband and I are looking to retire there.

  7. Anna C says:

I’ve been wanting to try the Prequel products, because you’ve been recommending them so highly, but I just couldn’t justify one more random online account.

I’ll definitely give them a try now that I can get it at Target!

  8. Jenn S. says:

Prequel also does a hypochlorous spray! I don’t know that Target carries it (yet?) though.

  9. Ashbash says:

36yo mother of 3 here and I swear by ponds (unscented) and Nivea Cream (in a tin).

  10. Anon says:

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Brow and Lash Serum JUST $15. Takes 2 Months to kick in BUT wow, I have the fluttering lashes of my dreams and my teenage over plucked eyebrows are slowly growing back (BUT it will take a miracle for them to where I’m happy with them).
Bonus it does not irritate my eyes- I suffer from dermatitis around my eyes/brows, so super sensitive.
And this Serum does not contain prostaglandins, an ingredient often found in other lash serums that can affect eye or skin pigmentation (yikes,)

  11. arie B says:

Just tried the vit C serum ( thank you target) Does it have a funny smell?

    • Belle says:

They all have a slight burnt wood smell. This one isn’t as bad as CE Ferulic, which burns my nasal passages.

  12. Sarah Schimmel says:

Just bought the Prequel facewash from Target!

Like you, I live in a cooler, dryer, climate and found that the Naturium body lotion has saved my skin – it’s unscented and gentle, so much so I use it on my kiddo with eczema.

  13. JdHS says:

also in my 40s and also slim lining my self care routine to funnel money into procedures that will make a difference. Because lets face it, no cream is going to give me poreless skin, but a CO2 laser treatment will.

For a lightweight moisturizer (that you can buy at target!) I’m really liking La Roche Posay’s Toleriane Double Repair moisturizer. You can get it at all of the online skin sites (LovelySkin, Dermstore, etc) but its reasonably priced and lightweight!

  14. Lynn says:

Another great Vitamin C is Timeless–fantastic dupe for the Skinceuticals product. And $25.

  15. Kw says:

Does anyone have a rec for a man affordable daily moisturizer/sun screen? I’d been using eucerine for decades, but they changed their formula to be much more dewy and shiny.

    • Kw says:

      Please excuse the typo above!

    • Kim says:

I use one from Trader Joe’s — Daily Facial Sunscreen Broad Spectrum 40 SPF. Supposedly it’s a dupe of the Goop sunscreen; I’ve never bought anything by Goop so I can’t say if that’s accurate, but I can say it’s not oily, leaves zero residue (I can immediately put in contacts after using it), and is matte.

  16. Ddoughm says:

Has anyone experienced eyelash regrowth where the eyelashes come in white? This has been my experience with Grande Lash– a few but not all growing in white. Not cute without mascara.

  17. Amy says:

For an unscented body lotion, I’ve been really liking the Trader Joe’s Midsummer Night’s Cream if you have a TJ’s near you.

  18. Lauren says:

I had a coworker yesterday tell me that I’m always glowing- which I’ve never heard in my entire life haha! 99% sure it’s from using the Prequel face wash and vitamin c serum from them. I’m 41.

    Love that brand!
