Ask the Edit: Comfortable Jackets for Work

Jan 30, 2024

Whether you’re headed into the office or working from home, sometimes you need a comfortable blazer. Something that can work a 14-hour day without feeling like a strait jacket.  Something that has the relaxed feel of a cardigan, but looks like a blazer.

Please share more comfortable jackets. I’m a manager of a large, young campaign staff and I need jackets to project authority.  However, the long nights and door-knocking make a tailored blazer a bad choice.  Please keep them coming.

A jacket is a great tool for, as you say, projecting authority.  I always feel more like a “real” attorney when I wear one.  And when I was young, female and working in politics, they acted like a kind of armor.  So I understand still wearing a blazer or structured topper even when it’s not retired.  Let’s try to make it more comfortable.

I purchased this shorter Boden knit jacket two months ago, and I loved it.  But I was so tired when I order it that I thought the jacket was black and red, but it was navy and red.  Not a colorway that flows seamlessly through my black-grounded wardrobe.  So when I spotted this longer, navy and black piped knit jacket, I was sold.  Put it in the cart.

If also in the office, this Wolff Jardigan from MM LaFleur will get so much wear.  I absolutely adore the light femininity of the ivory colorway.  So many colors, and always a classic.

I love the popped collar on this Marine Layer jacket.  The stronger shape gives it a great structure.  With black trousers and a black blouse or worn over a black sheath dress, it’s a great option for work.  But, break out a cool t-shirt and a relaxed jean, and it’s ready for work from home or casual Friday.

Another fantastic option is this BR Factory jacket.  The green is great, but it comes in a handful of colors. It also comes in petite.  Such a great look.

Looking for affordable choices?  H&M has this relaxed option that wears a bit more like a cardigan.  They also have this style in a black and white stripe.

I recently purchased a red Iro tweed jacket on the Real Real for a fraction of the original cost. The tweed fabric has a decent bit of weight (for a cold office), but is much less restricive than a traditional suiting jacket. The red reads a bit more of a fashion forward, but in a more neutral color would definitely read appropriately conservative for many roles. Lots of options on TRR for this type of thing!

I have the BR Factory cardigan in green and I get so many compliments when I wear it! And it’s soft and cozy.

The Find: An Affordable Desk Cardi

Welcome to the warm weather months. Outside, you will roast. Inside, you will freeze. The air conditioning will be your constant nemesis, as it “conditions” the air to a temperature that is primarily suitable for men. Luckily, this cardigan can keep you warm even when your fiery resentment wanes.
