Two Ways: Styling Grey Jeans

Oct 18, 2023

Usually when an influencer says “so many of you asked about ____,” they’re lying.  One person asked.  But I posted about grey jeans and between the comments, the DMs, the texts from friends, so many of you asked about styling them, I had to write this post.

So here you go, two ways to style grey denim.

The Jeans // If you’re looking for grey jeans, please refer to my original post for items in different price points and sizes.  The pair in this post come from Old Navy and are currently priced at a very affordable $29.  I like their charcoal color; it’s a bit more versatile than a light grey jean that will feel more casual.  These jeans come in plus, petite and tall as well.  Prefer a wider leg?  H&M has you covered with these darker wash grey flare legs.

Outfit No. One // Earlier this week, my MOH messaged me to say that she loved a pair of pants from a brand I had never heard of.  Then, she said the shocking part: She also loved their shackets.  Whoa, whoa, whoa, back that train up.  We’re wearing shackets?  When did we start wearing shackets?!

I inquired to another D.C. friend who has good style.  I had to ask for advice since I live in the PNW, where people wear shackets all the time.  Plaid ones. Like lumberjacks who have a cord of wood to chop.  “Are cool city girls wearing shackets?”  Her response came quickly: “Yes, you’re either wearing shackets or sweater polos.  Not both.”  That felt definitive.

Floored by this, I realized that it’s fall, and it’s warm there, and maybe a shacket is a good option for that.  So I styled this look with a shacket from BP, because while I may be willing to try this trend, I’m not spending more than $100 on it.  But for real, if I indulge in this trend, I’ll be buying this BR Factory jacket.

Layering the shacket over another sweater seemed prudent.  I chose this grey striped one.  But if you want a bit more color, I suggest a pine green or a grayish purple.  Both will work well here.

I imagine wearing this outfit to the farmer’s market, the pumpkin patch, or some other outdoor event where I want to look pulled together in case pictures with Sloane is on the agenda.  Thus, I kept the shoes and the belt bag casual.  I love this bag.  I would buy it if I had any use for a belt bag.  I looked for something similar for under-$175 and just couldn’t find anything with this level of sleek.  If something pops up in my searching, I will share it.

To finish the look I chose some Ray-Bans and a pair of uniquely shaped hoops from Missoma.  This outfit needs a little color, so this would be a good use for a sheer reddish-berry lip, like Glossier’s Vesper.  Hair should probably be worn down to continue the relaxed look.

Outfit No. 2 // When I was looking for some inspiration for this post, I spotted a grey and chocolate brown outfit and had a “wow, I didn’t even think of that, but wow” moment.  The color palette is just so refined, yet unexpected.  I adore it.

To put this look together, I chose a brown turtleneck from BR and a chocolate brown blazer from Nanette Lepore.  In real life, you want to make sure the browns are as close in color as possible.  Some chocolate browns are more red, while others are bluer.  You want the under-hue to be similar or at least complementary.  I also like this ASOS blazer (also in plus), and if you want a bit of a texture moment, this herringbone option from J.Crew.

For the shoes, I wanted to maintain the leg line, so I went with these cool, dark grey ankle boots from Franco Sarto.  If you wear grey trousers, these are the boot you need.  Having one color from your hips to your toes will also give you a taller appearance.  Prefer a flat?  These point toe ones from Amazon should do the trick.

For the accessories, I wanted a bit more glam, so I chose these Quay Tortoise Aviators which have a chic, slightly relaxed look.  Then, I added these more dramatic textured hoops from Missoma.  And to finish it off, a unique (kind of weird in a good way) shoulder bag from Cuyana.  The shape is just really different and a cool tote alternative.

As for the styling, I would wear this with my hair up, but a little loose to avoid that “strict teacher” look.  Then, I would add a rosy cheek to lighten it up.  This highlighter is my favorite for a blushy, not too pink look.

Chicagoan here reporting that I have definitely seen the cool girls in shackets. Very 90s.

Reporting from DC to say shackets are winning over sweater polos. That does not mean that either are cute.
