The Five Best: Outerwear for Spring

Apr 18, 2023

Spring outerwear is the best outerwear. Al fresco dinners. Evening baseball games. Nighttime strolls, chilly mornings. All of which benefit from a piece of chic outerwear. Here are five pieces that I recommend.

A Cool Moto Jacket // BlankNYC makes the best vegan leather outerwear available.  This light moto-jacket is one of their top sellers.  I also love their white leather jacket.  This quilted jacket (non-leather) is also very cool.

I love the brand.  If leather jackets are your look, check BlankNYC out.  They offer great pieces with inclusive sizing on many pieces.  You can also pick up their pieces on discount at Nordstrom Rack.  Prefer real leather or suede?  Banana Republic has you covered.

A Neutral Adjacent Trench // I have a brown trench, a black trench and a navy trench.  Basically everything I need to costume a spy movie set in Moscow in ’84.  But the trench I wear most frequently is a slate blue one that I purchased five years ago, because neutral-adjacent trench can pep up any outfit.

This BCBG gun flap trench in a deep, khaki green is perfect.  Another great option is this pale slate Bernardo trench.  Looking for a unique neutral?  Try this ivory trench from Nine West.

A Linen Scarf // Don’t need a coat?  A lightweight scarf made of gauze or linen keeps the chill away on a late walk home, but can be tied up in a handbag.  This Vince cashmere-linen blend scarf is a lovely option.  I love the neutral, subtle color palette.  I also like this darker navy and salt stripe scarf from Wolf & Badger.  Need something under-$50?  Try this ivory option from Ted Baker.

A Relaxed Bomber // J.Crew delivers with this navy bomber jacket with a just-right mix of prep and edge.  This satin-looking green bomber from Revolve is a bit more modern.  What’s great about this style is that it can be worn casually with jeans or layered over a summery dress to add a relaxed touch.

If you’re looking for a very casual style to wear with a athleisure, several retailers have you covered.  This Retroplush Jacket from Athleta is made of a comfortable, soft material.  Into the 90s trend permeating the retail shelves?  This quilted chambray jacket is a great option.

A Good Umbrella // It’s been quite rainy where I live, which isn’t normal.  This Barbour umbrella has an incredible stripe.  It’s a cool umbrella that stands out in a see of black.  I also like this dotted, clear umbrella from Kate Spade.  Need a travel umbrella that can fit in your purse?  Repel makes great umbrellas for wet, windy climates.

Seconding the BlankNYC rec! I don’t buy leather and I have several of their jackets. I find they wear pretty darn well for the price point!

Any chance you could share how you style your trenches? I have a tough time picturing a slate one with other items

Seconding this! And maybe some examples of how to dress a trench down. I would love to wear a trench, but wear very casual clothes most of the time. (leggings, athleisure pants, lots of slip on shoes/sneakers)

What about knit moto jackets? I had one from loft that I was obsessed with and absolutely wore out. Looking to replace it and update for this decade. 😉
