The Find: Simple, Affordable Wrap Dresses

Dec 9, 2020

Wrap dresses are my favorite.  And when you’ve gained a little weight (and who hasn’t during the pandemic), you can buy them one size bigger so that they’re always flattering.  They’re comfortable and still look professional.

There are a lot of lovely, affordable wrap dresses on sale at Old Navy right now.  This ribbed-knit oatmeal dress is fabulous (also in tall and petite).  It’s also offered in black.

These dresses are so easy.  Wear them to work with a blazer.  Wear them on Friday with flats.  Wear them on the weekends to cocktail hour with high heels and a statement earring.

The dress is also available in maternity and plus-sizes.  So there is no good reason to miss out on this dress.

I’ve gained weight during the pandemic but as always, it goes to only one place. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing… My belly! Would sizing up in a wrap dress help to disguise? The wrap dresses I have seem to accentuate the pouch. Please help, love the style of dress!

    • Jess says:

You should try to find some wrap dresses in prints – a good larger scale print can help camouflage a lumpy belly. Solids just seem to accentuate it (especially lighter colored solids).

Sizing up my help. As the reader said, I think a pattern would help. I would also look into these Spanx underwear that just provide a little tummy shaping, but aren’t tight at all. Can’t remember what they’re called but they have a lace rear.

Are there women that wear dresses that low cut to work?? Or is everyone wearing a cami or tank top under this style of dress? Having to wear a bra, tank/cami, tights, and a slip often negates the “ease” of throwing on a dress in my mind!

    • Cait says:

I sew a snap into the top of all my wrap dresses to avoid the low-cut/cami issue. If you position the snap well, it holds and just looks like the V of the dress ends a bit higher.

This is so timely- I just posted a question about weight gain to the Facebook group!

I always look extremely voluptuous in a wrap dress, even sizing up. It doesn’t seem to matter how I style it, I end up with the lush figure of a bygone era…
