Monday Outfit: A Chic Look for Fall

Oct 5, 2020

As the next wave of the pandemic rolls in, we’re confronting a winter spent at home.  Kyle and I had a conversation this weekend about what we will feel safe doing, and the list wasn’t very long.  But one thing we like to do is a get a coffee from a shop near our house and walk the neighborhood.  And this outfit would be perfect for that.

This outfit from Styled Snapshots mixes simple pieces in a palette of neutrals to create an outfit that still feels fresh.  Most of us probably have similar pieces in our wardrobe already, so this is an easy outfit to recreate.

Coat // Herringbone coats are particularly scarce this fall.  This Sandro coat in a mixed grey melange is about the closest thing that I could find.  But I think the critical elements are the color and the slim-fitting shape.  So I would give this Express coat, this H&M belted coat, and this tailored ASOS coat a look.

Sweater // I prefer this lighter camel sweater from Halogen to the darker tan.  But if you’re into the unexpected look of a Bourbon-colored sweater, this Express sweater with a balloon sleeve is worth a look.  I also like this mocha-colored sweater from Target.  This side-button crewneck from Talbot’s has a cool look and comes in plus-size and petite.

Shirt // Banana Republic usually has the best button-ups.  This Riley Fit shirt is a favorite of mine.  If you want something a bit looser fitting, try this oversized shirt.

Jeans // I have a pair of open knee black jeans and I reach for them whenever I need to lift my look a bit.  They’re just a fun, stylish way to bring a casual outfit new life.  This pair from Topshop is an affordable option.  These Paige Hoxton jeans are a nice designer option.  And if you’re petite, try Madewell.

Shoes // I’m not sure I would choose mules for walking around, but I sure like the look of them.  These Madewell Gemma Mules are a nice choose for an at-home shoe that isn’t a slipper.  I would probably select these Calvin Klein Hannah Loafers instead.  Wide feet?  These Franco Sarto loafers are a nice option.

Accessories // These Kendra Scott earrings and a pair of simple aviators finish off the look.

Styling // I have a feeling makeup wearing will continue to be sporadic this fall.  But I’ve been styling my hair almost every day with my beloved Conair hot rollers.  Just dry your hair, roll it up, and let it style itself.

I think it will be rare this fall/winter that I bother to elevate my style above leggings and a sweater/sweatshirt, but I do love this look! And thank you for sharing it — I learned how to dress for work but usually find it difficult to find the right late-30s look for weekends.

Agreed–fall will likely be more casual than this, but I love this for a Thanksgiving look! I might sub leggings for the jeans but on a Zoom call with the family that day, no one will know what my bottom half looks like. Looking forward to the “after times” when I anticipate being more styled again…

I started a new job in May and we don’t even Zoom — some colleagues I’ve only seen once, ever. I have (d)evolved from ‘one of the most overdressed in the office’ to ‘strictly loungewear.’ Will I *ever* wear those nice dresses and shoes again? Who knows. Still loving this look, though.

Ohh this brings up a blog idea that I would love. I just turned 33 and as I approach mid-30s, I find myself hesitating over outfits a lot. Can you do a 20s, 30s, 40s sort of styling post? I am on the heels of a divorce and in need some fresh ideas that make me feel young without making people cringe.

Ah yes, winter. The hubs and I had a similar conversation and there is not much we are comfortable doing, either. I’m getting the house ready be caulking windows and painting the golden oak trim white so we don’t have to stare at it for 5 months. I am not looking forward to it. We may need to buy snowshoes so we can walk outside!

    • Belle says:

Take it from someone who just did this, it’s easier to just replace the trim. Rent a nail gun and a circular saw or pay a professional. I think I spent a year painting trim.

I love the look of white button-downs but for some reason (likely too many years in Catholic school lol), I hate the feel of stiffer/cotton ones especially when layering. Anyone have any recs for the same look in a softer/slinkier material that lies well under a sweater?

    • Crockett says:

Yes! The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens – check out the “silky” collection. Perfect extra hidden buttons and I love how they fit overall. Check out the sale section, and they have sales on full-priced items regularly.

    • Amanda says:

MM LaFleur Lagarde top. Light and silky, great for layering. Not sure if they sell them anymore but I snagged one on Poshmark.

Thank you for your superior mind-reading abilities! I’ve been wondering if my pandemic hair (which hasn’t been this long since I was in college in the last century) would benefit from hot rollers, and I was just thinking about asking for a recommendation.

I have a white blouse, black jeans, cognac Birdies Starlings, and a heather-y tweed ruana I bought in Ireland probably 20 years ago, so I’m almost set to recreate today’s outfit,

Like you, I prefer a lighter camel sweater and have been looking online for one since our weather has unaccountably chosen to dip into the 30’s at night. Since you and Angie from You Look Fab seem to be reading my mind, I was also delighted to see her post today on Naadam’s $75, comes-in-14-colors, sustainably sourced cashmere sweaters. (Please delete if this isn’t appropriate!)

I LOVE the color of that camel sweater you chose, this is such a great look! Where on the cashmere scale do you think Halogen cashmere falls? There is a very very similar J. Crew cashmere sweater for the same price and I’m sure it could be had on sale sometime soon is all.

As far as winter goes, school drop off and pick up are under way now and while I’m not wearing my Sunday’s Best to walk down the street, it is a nice exercise in dressing at all for both my daughter and I. I’m kind of looking forward to the layers and the beanies and sweatshirts over these smoky, sweltering last days of summer in SoCal. Thinking of winter also helps me think past the 4 weeks. To quote Hagrid ‘What’s comin’ will come, an’ we’ll meet it when it does.’

    • Belle says:

I haven’t bought one of these this year, and the cashmere always seems to change from year to year at both places. But I do have a sweater from Halogen two years ago and I would say it is comparable to J.Crew now, not J.Crew four years ago when it was bad.

Re; what we are comfortable doing this winter — the same thing we’ve felt comfortable doing since March: nothing besides pre-dawn runs and doctor appointments that cannot be postponed/conducted online. Because we live in a county with a bunch of people who think their right to expose us is more important than anyone else’s right to breathe uncontaminated air.

On those few occasions we leave the house, we wear clothes that can be put in the washing machine on the way inside (as we head for the shower), and that will continue through winter. A slight modification for winter (slight because we live in Southern California, so our winter outdoor wear is pretty modest) will be that coats that cannot go in the machine will stay in the garage, unworn for five days, before being reused.

    • Belle says:

Being in a mid-size city in WA, we’ve been a bit luckier. Until recently, I felt very comfortable going to restaurants if I could eat outside or I knew there was a LOT of space between seating areas. We also have been able to find socially distanced activities like corn hole to play with friends because everyone has a yard. But we’re going to have to stop all of that as case numbers go up. I know a lot of people who are still going to have “pods” who can come over to their homes, but I’m not comfortable with that because I don’t trust people not to break the rules.
