Best Purchases Ever: Workout Week

Aug 5, 2019

Getting back into shape was one of my goals for 2019.  I’ve made steady (if slow) progress.  And while I still loathe working out, as I get older, I can feel how important it is for my body.  So this week, I thought I would feature the products that have made it a little bit easier.

Starting with a pair of socks.  That’s right, socks.

These socks from Feetures are the best.  When all of my Feetures are in the wash, and I’m forced to wear my old socks, I really notice a difference.  The Feetures socks are more supportive.  They wick moisture away better, keeping my feet cooler.  And they just feel softer and more comfortable on the foot.

I never thought that I would feel so much love for an athletic sock, but I am genuinely bummed when I have to wear other socks.

The Elite Max Cushion Socks ($15) are my favorite.  They come in a wide range of colors; this emerald being my favorite.  The brand also makes everyday socks, and graduated compression socks, which I will be buying the next time I have a long flight.

As for sizing, I wear a size 8.5-9 shoe, and I’m in a large sock.  So consult the size guide before buying, and if you’re on the cusp of the larger size, I suggest going up.

If you have a runner in your family, or a gift recipient who loves the gym, I would highly recommend these as a holiday stocking stuffer.

I have been working out for years, but I’ve always worn cheap, Target Champion socks. I saved my splurge workout item for pants, where I could definitely see and feel a difference. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago when I forgot to pack my socks. My gym buddy loaned me a pair of her Balega running socks and my life changed. My feet were actually cooler in the heavier socks, my shoes were more comfortable, I could run a 6 minute mile (ok, that’s a total lie). It was amazing the difference good socks made. I’m now slowly stocking up on Balegas, and like you, am sad when I have to wear my old cheap ones.

I also use Balega. I “borrowed” a pair of my mom’s once and they were always my favorite socks. I recently bit the bullet and replaced all of my socks with balegas. I’m no longer the big runner I used to be but I still work out a good amount and nice socks make all the difference!

A few years ago a friend heckled me into getting a fancy pair of running socks, and I now refuse to wear anything else. They wick, support, ensure my feet never blister, and last forever. My favorites are the thorlos, which come in an array of amusing colors and are almost always on sale at REI https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/product/129542/thorlo-experia-multisport-socks.

For super-hot days I swap them for brooks socks and on super-cold days I use smartwool running socks. I use the same running shoes year-round and modulate temperure via socks.

Thank you for these socks! You mentioned them once before and I bought them on your suggestion and have become a believer! I am building my collection so I can someday only wear these. Feetures are the best!!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
