Three Ways: How to Style a Sequin Skirt

Dec 20, 2018

Sequin skirts are a great special occasion piece because they can be used to create so many outfits.  But there are some basic principles to follow when styling them.  Here are three chic outfits for New Year’s Eve.

All of these outfits follow three simple rules for styling sequin skirts:

  1. Choose a skirt with tightly woven sequins. Scattered sequins tend to look cheap.
  2. The skirt is the star of the show. Simple tops in a single color let it shine.
  3. Accessories should have flair but not overwhelm.

All three outfits harness basic pieces — a silk cami, a button-up bodysuit (no bunching), an off-the-shoulder sweater –the kind of pieces that you might already have in your wardrobe.  But the three outfits have slightly different looks –glamorous, classic, feminine.

Looking for something more casual?  Try a simple v-neck sweater and a pair of classic sneakers.

Skirt Mango Aqua Skirt ($80)

Outfit No. 1 Geometric Drop Earrings ($25) // Banana Republic Camisole ($90) // Matt & Nat Abiko Clutch ($95) // Sam Edelman Aly Heels ($84)

Outfit No. 2 Jenny Packham Cluster Earring ($40) // J.Crew Stretch Bodysuit ($78) // Mackage Rubie Crossbody ($184) // Rodney D’Orsay Flats ($120)

Outfit No. 3 Flower Studs ($38) // Rebecca Taylor Off-the-Shoulder Sweater ($113) // Satin Evening Bag ($58) // Marc Fisher Mayae Boots ($126)

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.
