Re: #9 – I work in a male-dominated field (IT) in a male-dominated industry (Tech). I’ve been lucky to have a gender-blind boss, who has consistently promoted me, trained me and given me opportunities because I’ve done good work and shown the right attitude and aptitude since I started working for him 11 years ago. Now he tells people if he left the company I would be his chosen successor.
My experience has been the combination of some good luck, and quite a bit of hard work. Results may vary, but it’s worth it if it’s something you want to do.
I figured out earlier this year that I have outgrown my current job (my first permanent salaried position after graduating college) and discovered soon after that there was no hope of remedying that at my current 10 person company. I’m so glad I listened to my gut and started the daunting task of looking for a new job when I did, because I’m now anxiously awaiting a potential job offer that’s everything my current position isn’t.
