Ask Belle: Black Turtleneck Sweaters

Nov 17, 2014

Dear Belle,

Do you have any suggestions as to where I can find the perfect black turtleneck for the upcoming cold winter? I am looking for one that is snug at the neck (no cowls), thin enough to wear under a sweater but not so sheer that you can’t wear it under an open cardigan or jacket. No wool please; I’m allergic.

Thanks! Maria in Chicago

Non-wool turtleneck sweaters are difficult to find.  However, I did locate a couple…

Ralph Lauren Silk Cotton Turtleneck ($110)

This Ralph Lauren sweater meets your requirements.  Jones New York also offers a cotton turtleneck sweater.  You might also try a supima cotton turtleneck from Land’s End.

Ann Taylor Everyday Turtleneck ($70, petite)

Prefer wool?  This Ann Taylor sweater is a great place to start.  I also like this Gap Turtleneck sweater.  And Target has a $49 basic turtleneck.

Looking for turtleneck fit tips?  Full-length sleeves look best on most people.  Don’t buy your turtlenecks too tight; you’ll look like you’re being suffocated.  If you want to wear a necklace, try a long pendant.  It will lengthen the look.

Gap Outlet! I found the perfect one at Gap Outlet – ribbed, thin enough to fit under a jacket and long enough to work over pants! I too suffer from the dreaded wool allergy, and this one is cotton with a hint of spandex, nothing else. Note, this isn’t the Eversoft one which has wool and nylon blend. I don’t think they carry it at normal Gap stores – it may be an outlet only style.

    Three Dots. Perfect weight.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
