Happy Hour: A Toast for Papa

Jul 19, 2013

Today is National Daiquiri Day.  Truth be told, I have never had a daiquiri.  So when a co-worker suggested a daiquiri made with Hemingway’s own recipe, I was immediately intrigued.  Even though I haven’t read much Hemingway in my life. (Two things added to the “to do list”.)

While I haven’t made this particular cocktail (yet), I like that Hemingway’s Daiquiri includes a mix of rum with grapefruit juice, lime juice and maraschino liqueur.  I also like that the directions allow me to use the word ‘frappe’ in a sentence.

It’s the little things.

But what to wear while sipping such a cocktail?

Milly Aida Dress ($375)

When I think of Hemingway, I think of the Florida Keys, bright colors, vintage shapes and palm prints.  This Milly dress captures all of that with a flirty skirt that’s perfect for a beach wedding.  The dress also comes in pink.

I also found a pair of palm dresses at Modcloth, one with straps and one with cap sleeves.  If a sheath dress is what you’re after, Ann Taylor has this one (also in petites) and this minimalist Acne dress.  But my favorite is this breezy blue Ann Taylor dress, though the hi-lo hem would need a chop.

Not feeling the palm print?  It’s not for everyone.  Why not try some bright colors, fun prints and crisp white cotton instead?

This Milly circle skirt dress has a watercolor print, while this London Times dress has a more obvious floral print.  I adore the Santorini-blue color of this Plenty chevron print, and the price isn’t bad at $128.  And I think this white Aryn K dress would be perfect for a beach vacation.

Plus-size: Modcloth has a pair of dresses, including this black and white palm print and this bright red frock.  Petite: Any of the Ann Taylor dresses above, or this breezy, white cotton dress with pink embroidery.

Happy Hour

Ruth’s Chris has a pretty delish Hemingway Daiquiri (ask for the old recipe – they changed it recently and its not as good)
