New Year's Eve 2011: Pleated Maxi Skirt

Dec 27, 2011

Skirt: Pleated Maxi ($62)

From Left, Necklace: Linked Square Ornament Necklace ($93) Bag: Kate Spade Confectionary Clutch ($225) Shoe: Marc Jacobs Love Flat ($273) Sweater: Tippi Sweater ($73)

From Right, Earrings: Andara Dangle Earrings ($65) Bag: Metallic Jacquard Clutch ($31) Shoe: Kate Spade Mode Pewter ($149) Top: Velutina Top ($137)

Bold is Best.  One of my good friends loves dresses, but hates showing her legs.  This pleated maxi skirt is the perfect solution.  Pair it with a ladylike, emerald sweater for a bold color combination that is sure to turn heads.

Here, I added an emerald statement necklace for extra oomph.  I also chose a stone-encrusted Kate Spade clutch to raise a notch above a basic gold bag.    If you need earrings, I’d do a simple diamond (or rhinestone) stud in a gold setting.  And to maintain the ladylike elements, I decided on a flat over a heel.

This look is colorful, feminine and ultra-comfortable.  Dance the night away in these flats and flirty skirt.

For the hair, I would do a carefully constructed wave or a wavy do pinned into a low updo.  Makeup should be kept simple with a sheer berry lip and a lightly shimmered eye and light eyeliner.  I’d also paint my fingernails with a coat of pale pink, like Essie Ballet Slipper.  When you have this much color happening, it’s best to keep the makeup basic.

Glitz n’ Glam. Lord knows, I love sequins, metallics and shimmer.  I’m incurable.  And New Year’s Eve is the one night per year when I can go all out and no one will care.

This outfit pairs a shimmery, silver sequin top with the colorful skirt for a fun, feisty look.  To balance the shimmer in the blouse, I chose pewter metallic accessories.  They keep up with the shiny look, but don’t overpower the sequin top.  And when you have this much shimmer, a simple stone earring in a deep purple is all you really need.

For the hair, I would do a tightly combed high bun for added drama.  I’d keep the makeup shimmery but simple with a sheer berry lip and a hint of Laura Mercier Orchid Mosaic Bloc to brighten your cheeks.  I’d also keep the eye makeup to a simple wash and eyeliner with loads of mascara.

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.
