Happy Hour: So Long Summer…

Aug 31, 2012

It’s a bit of a truncated day here since I’m headed out for the long Labor Day Weekend.  To mark the unofficial end of the summer season, let’s mourn with a white cotton sundress.

Halston Heritage Cotton Halterneck Dress (The Outnet, $212)

The sizes on the dress are a bit limited since it’s the end of the season, but if you’re a size 10, it also comes in black. This Calvin Klein dress has a very similar style, comes in many sizes and is under-$100.

For something more substantial, this DvF shirtdress has a ladylike shape for under-$200.  You could add a v-neck sweater and wear this dress into early-fall.  Want something sportier?  This Lacoste is the perfect preppy frock.

And what do we drink while taking our white cotton dresses for one last outing?

The Arnold Palmer, made from half lemonade and half iced tea, is a classic summer drink.  The John Daly is a spiked Arnold Palmer.

There are several different ways to make a John Daly.  You can mix sweet tea vodka with unsweetened lemonade and ice for a simple cocktail.  But personally, I prefer to make my drinks with fresher ingredients.

Belle’s John Daly

3 cups of freshly brewed and chilled English Breakfast Tea

1.5 cups of Paula Deen’s Best Lemonade

1/2 cup Absolut Citron Vodka

5 ounces Absolut Vodka

Mint Sprigs

Sliced Lemon

makes six servings

To mix, bruise three or four mint leaves in your hand and place them in the bottom of an iced tea or collins glass.  Fill glass half-way full of ice.  Squeeze a little bit of lemon juice into the glass and drop the rest of the wedge on top of the ice.

Combine chilled tea, lemonade and vodka in a pitcher.  Then pour the mixture into the glasses and serve.

Love the idea that a spiked Arnold Palmer is a John Daly! Though I would suggest using a sweet tea vodka to replace some if not all of the plain vodka – Firefly is a favorite from my time in Kentucky 🙂

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]
