The Floor Report: Miss M's Transition Team

Jan 13, 2010

After a long hiatus, Miss M and The Floor Report have returned.  Miss M is the manager of a local boutique and a budding personal stylist, her column appears here every Wednesday.

Baby, it’s cold outside. Like really effing cold. And the temps aren’t going up drastically any time soon. So if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Or at least suck it up, wrap up in an infinity scarf,  and warm-up in style.

But even though you need to embrace the cold weather gear, that doesn’t mean you should miss out on these hot new trends.  And the best part?  These styles will carry you through into the warm weather months as well.

Trouser leggings are selling out everywhere, and for good reason. These leggings fits just like a cotton legging or your skinniest jean, tuck into boots, lookk great with flats and a tunic, and are much warmer than your traditional heavy tights. The addition of pockets on the rear and stitched details like your favorite jeans, the trouser legging always appears polished while feeling comfortable. I can’t think of a better, more chic addition to a wardrobe, whether you’re a mom, mogul, or middle-management girl with an eye for style.

Dylan George Knit Pant (Nordstrom, $139)

Lace Up A combination of texture, femininity, sexiness and a hint of the unexpected comes in one lacy package.  Take a cue from your undergarments and get laced up.  Work this fabric where the eye can see  – on tee shirts, tanks, under a suit jacket, or with a flirty dress.  And since being a frugalista means you look good while still being able to afford the heating bill, check out Rodarte’s new collection for Target featuring all things ruffled, racy and lacy.

Rodarte for Target Lace Slip Dress (Target, $39.99)

Layer On the Leather Leather jackets, gloves, vests – even shirts! are coming out of the closet and are the perfect way to add warmth and edge to the most basic of looks.  Substitute a leather blazer for your everyday suit jacket and instantly kick up your look for happy hour, or a boring Tuesday office meeting.  Layer a leather vest  over an easy button down, skinny jeans and booties for a polished weekend look.   As Spring florals start hitting the stores in dresses and breezy tanks, grab your jacket or vest for an easy, eclectic transition.

Mike & Chris Leather Vest (ShopBop, $247)

Don’t be a Fair-weather Froster – Accessorize no matter the temperature!  No matter how many Georgetown cupcakes you’ve had, or how many winter hibernation and holiday pounds you’ve lost or gained, accessories always fit. Heavy metals, crystals, and rough rhinestones will help you sparkle and shine through the cold.  Looking for a new piece to light up your wardrobe?  Try this Fallon cuff from Barney’s or a layered necklace.

Classified Layers Necklace (Forever21, $11)

Melt the Ice with Ikat  This bold print is making a statement in scarves, skirts, and everything in between.  Layer it now with cold weather essentials like tights, boots, and long sleeve tees.  As the mercury rises, grab your bronzer and best sandals and leave the layers behind.

Cleobella Ikat Boho Sack (ShopBop, $94)

No matter how you choose to cope, it’s important to remember that the cold won’t last forever.  Now might be a good time to cut back on the sweater shopping and start stocking up on the versatile pieces that you can wear now and in April.  This will prevent those harried, crazy spending sprees that take place on the first warm days in March and leave us with a closet full of Lilly Pulitzer dresses and candy colored cardigans that we will never wear again.  It’s time to start thinking about a transition, even if it seems like there is no end in sight.

I have been on a serious trouser legging kick recently! I bought two pairs in two weeks, and I’m considering a thrid! They’re so flattering.

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]
