Earlier this week, a former intern of mine issues a pop quiz on the topic of separates for work. She wears black suits almost every day, but after I posted a red Chloe skirt in the 10th Commandment feature, she decided that it was time to branch out. But once she had the skirt in her possession, she quickly realized that she had no idea how to wear it.
While black with red is a classic combination, wearing a black button-up with a red pencil skirt is a little stark for my taste. For this outfit, I toned down the austerity by pairing the skirt with a printed blouse instead of a pure black one. I think it lightens things up just enough to keep the outfit fresh.
If you want something bold, you could follow Wit & Whimsy’s lead and try colorblocking with bright separates using a cobalt sweater or amethyst-colored blouse. Or you could go in the complete opposite direction and mix in a nude blouse. Either way, you’re outfit is certain to stand out from the crowd.

That's my motto. Abd while the shade has changed over the years, the philosophy is a foundational one.
Love the cobalt and red together. I just wish that bracelet was a necklace. Still with only 5 links.
