The Five Baby Gifts You Need on a Registry

Sep 20, 2022

When we were putting together our baby registry, the best piece of advice I received was to keep it minimal.  You need essentials, but you also never know what your baby will like or what you will use.  And from our pared down registry, there are a handful of items that have made our lives so much easier that they deserve your attention.

Muslin Burp Cloths // Can a burp cloth change your life?  Yes, yes it can.  These muslin ones from Amazon are thick, durable, and highly absorbent.  It’s the only reason Kyle and I don’t spend our entire day covered in formula.  Just toss them in the wash with a bit of bleach, and they look new after dozens of uses.  (I bought three 10-packs, that seemed to be the right number to never run out.)

Formula Bottle Filler // I knew I was only going to breastfeed for a limited time due to work, mental health, and just needing to hand my child to someone else at 4:00AM.  If you will be formula-feeding or hybrid-feeding, the Baby Brezza Formula Pro is a splurge that pays for itself in the time it saves you.

The machine fills bottles with warm, perfectly mixed formula.  No measuring, no shaking, no heating.  Just push button and go.  We love it so much, we may use some Amazon gift cards to upgrade to the wi-fi enabled one.  My one tip, however, is to buy extra funnels, as they need to be washed every four feedings.

The Nook Nursing Pillow // This pillow is the ultimate multi-tasker (and at that price, it better be).  Whether you’re breast feeding or bottle feeding, it makes feeding a breeze.  You can use it to prop your baby up while sitting on the floor or on the couch.  And, if you develop back pain after giving birth, it is the most solid back-support pillow ever.

Two Way Zip Onesies // Sloane’s wardrobe is essentially footie-pajamas and swaddles at this point.  So having a onesie that you can unzip from the foot to make diaper changes easier is the best.  We only bought a few newborn onesies, and every larger size I’m ordering has a two-way zipper.  Kyte Baby has great ones made of super soft bamboo.  And don’t sleep on Carter’s for affordable onesies that are very well made. (I bought this $8 lamb onesie in every size, that’s how cute it is.)

Dawn Power Wash Dish Spray // If you do dishes, this new Power Wash Spray is a game changer.  You just spray it, wipe it, and rinse it off.  Plus, it smells like green apple or light pear. Where was this when I lived in an apartment with no dishwasher?

Great essentials list! One other thing that was a total game changer for us were these wipeable/waterproof diaper changing covers from Target. (https://www.target.com/p/wipeable-changing-pad-cover-with-plush-sides-cloud-island-8482-two-by-two-animals-gray/-/A-82746936#lnk=sametab)
We had the normal cloth covers but found that it was constantly getting soiled. These wipeable ones made our lives so much easier, without having to splurge on those pricey diaper changing pads. He’s almost two years old now and it’s still going strong!

I always get the Piyo Piyo baby nail scissors which were a game changer for our babies. Also the baby banana toothbrush – I’ve yet to meet a baby that didn’t love it as a teether. Both inexpensive and useful add-ons to registry gifts. But this list is perfect!

    • Kate says:

Oh my goodness, nail scissors are a life saver for itty bitty baby nails. I ended up buy three to stash all over (bathroom, diaper bag, diaper caddy) and always give at baby showers.

  3. AAR1 says:

The dawn dish soap is also a great thing for pretreating stained baby clothes!

    • Nancy says:

My babies are long grown, but I use regular Dawn as my primary stain treater and it is AMAZING, wish I had know about it during those stain- filled years! Great results, even in cold water, highly recommend.

  4. Amy says:

All the two way zipper jammies!

  5. AJT says:

Two way zip onesies are great! A lovely baby gift to give friends (though pricey to buy as your baby’s full wardrobe) are Magnetic Me onesies. They use magnets instead of zips or buttons, and make middle of the night changes SO much easier!

    • irmck says:

My husband LOVES the magnets. He’s very disappointed in how expensive they are, and how there just isn’t a bigger selection on patterns. He loves them.

  6. Sarah says:

+1 for the Baby Brezza. It was a total game changer for us and was honestly the best baby investment we made!

  7. irmck says:

YES to the two way zippers! I honestly don’t understand why any of them only have one way zip.

  8. Tiffany says:

I had 1,000 of those burp cloths, a great choice!

  9. Jessica says:

Another +1 for the Baby Brezza – was the best investment for our 2 babies (especially when preparing 5 bottles to send to day care) and is still my favorite gift to give new parents.

Also love the double zipper sleepers – made the mistake ONE time of putting baby in a sleeper with snaps. That was a 3am daddy meltdown.
