Casual Style: Singing the Blues

Jan 26, 2011

Dear Belle,

Next week, I am traveling back to the district for the first time in my new job as LA.  While I’m there, my Boss’ wife has invited us all to dinner with some family friends.  I’m told that the event is at a moderately nice restaurant, but that most of the staff will wear jeans.  I’ll becoming straight from a town hall, so what should I wear?

I don’t want to be overdressed, but I also don’t want to be underdressed.  I was thinking about wearing a jacket that I just bought at Anthropologie.  Could you give me some ideas?

May

First off, that’s a great jacket.  I may need to purchase that for myself.  I love the silhouette.

That being said, I appreciate your predicament.  It can be tough to know how to dress for professional events held after hours or on the weekends.  But I think this jacket would look lovely with a pair of straight leg jeans.

For this outfit, I decided to mix the silver jacket with some blue separates.  I prefer muted tones for town hall meetings, since you want to blend in a bit.  But a few chic accessories can make the ensemble right for evening.

Here I’ve mixed in a pair of open, bow booties (love these).  I also added a pair of sapphire-hued earrings and sparkly brooch for the lapel.  I also chose a turquoise bag instead of a jewel tone for a little bit of punch.

This outfit is perfect for a professional dinner or an evening on the town with friends.  You could also replace the clutch with a satchel or tote and wear the outfit on casual Friday.  Enjoy the blazer, I think you’ll find a lot of fun ways to wear it.

Just a piece of advice. Whatever you wear, make sure the top is high necked, the jacket stays on and the jeans aren't too tight.

Seriously loving this outfit. A lot.

May–thank you for pointing out this cute blazer at such a great price!

Belle–I cant wait until it gets a bit warmer to wear this outfit. I just love when I already own similar pieces to the great outfits you put together. You sure to know how to brighten up a cold, slushy day in DC 🙂

There is nothing to not love about this outfit. Thanks Belle!

  5. J. says:

I would think to go with a simpler approach. Like some of the new, wider silhouetted trousers and a simple, quality, and perfectly fitting white button shirt.

  6. lorrwill says:

I absolutely love that ensemble – for a very young, very think person.

    I meant thin! Not think.

I'm going back to work now.

FANTASTIC outfit! And I want to go get that jacket now…

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
