Cheap Frills: Making a Statement

Feb 16, 2011

When I want to jazz up an outfit, I reach for three things: rings, scarves and belts.  Today, in fact, I’m wearing a statement ring in lemon quartz and a light ivory scarf to lift a rather boring printed skirt and sweater outfit. (The dry cleaner has four of my five suits.)  The great thing about these pieces is that they’re simple, make an impact and they’re cheap.  My ring was $40 and my scarf was $29.  Aren’t cheap frills the best?

Polyvore set here.

All of the pieces in the montage above is under $50 and worth every penny.  I love the gold leaf ring from TopShop and the lapis ring next to it.  I’d probably wear them together, one on each hand.    The purple paisley scarf in the second line is one of the few paisley pieces that I have ever loved, and the ivory basic next to it is a great staple piece for any wardrobe.

As for the belts, I love them all.  I’ve put the pyramid buckle belt in my online shopping cart at least four times.  And at just $15, I’m not sure how much longer my resolve will hold.

While I love bracelets, necklaces, shoes and bags, these three are the accessories that I come back to over and over again when my outfit needs a boost.   If you’re looking to add a bit of punch to your wardrobe without spending a fortune, a new ring, scarf or belt is a great way to inject a bit of style without breaking the bank.  Now, I’m going to go buy that belt…drat.

I am obsessed with cocktail rings! Another great place to find them is the sale jewelry bin at Banana Republic – I've found three there (separate occasions) and each was less than $15.

Can you talk about how to wear scarves without looking like Daphne from Scooby-do or a flight attendant? I keep buying scarves but for some reason I can't seem to style them well with an outfit without it looking forced.

I second what Jen said! I need scarf ideas.

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]
