Three Ways: Floral Skirt

Mar 8, 2011

Unless you’re feeling adventurous, it’s best to pair a printed or floral skirt with solid neutrals.  It’s significantly easier than matching prints (that’s another lesson for another day), and if you choose the right colors and separates, it’s just as chic.

For this outfit, we mixed a simple, white button-down with a heavy leather belt to create a modern take on the blouse and skirt combination.  A pair of nude pumps, lengthen the leg line and keep a neutral look.  But I also added turquoise jewelry for an extra pop of color.

Here a bold blouse and a chunky floral necklace spice up the pencil skirt for evening.  Again, we used a neutral shoe to lengthen legs and we added a neutral clutch with a hint of metallic.  This outfit is perfect for dinners out or a trip to the theater.

One of the benefits of living in D.C. is being able to cruise the Smithsonian on the weekends.  Here we have flat shoes for walking, but instead of nude we chose a bright color.  I also added a simple white tee, a casual jacket for the unpredictable spring weather, and a crossbody bag so you can pack a water bottle and any other essentials you need.

All three are cute! I love the floral necklace.

In the museum outfit, I'm wondering about matching the dark hardware on the jacket with the gold clasp on the bag. Is it okay that they don't match since this is a more casual look? I have a number of pieces I would like to wear together (olive jacket like above with gunmetal snaps with gold purse etc.), but together they just look …off.

    Thanks, Belle!

I happened to buy this exact skirt last weekend but wasn't exactly sure how I'd wear it. These ensemble suggestions are awesome. Thanks!

Beautiful!! Stopping at Anne Taylor on my way home tonight… Thanks Belle!

I mix-and-match metals (jewelry, bag hardware, etc) a lot and I don't think it's a faux pas. I feel like that “rule” dates back to the time when women were expected to match their shoes to their handbags.

Or, in the words of Stacy and Clinton, “It doesn't 'match.' It 'GOES'!”

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]
