The Range: Voting Tees

Sep 9, 2020

With campaigns going virtual, campaign tees will be in short supply this year.  Luckily, voting is in vogue, so fashion brands are designing political t-shirts aplenty.  Here are a few that caught my eye.

Love that Madewell tee but be warned – I ordered it on July 7 and I’m still waitlisted. They keep pushing the ship date. Who knows if I’ll even get it before the election! PS – saw a similar one on Etsy here:

Love this roundup! I love that Madewell tee, but I have a question: I’ve seen many similar shirts on Etsy and other places. Is this a case of a big corporation ripping off smaller designers without giving credit? Or vice versa? How would I figure that out?

    • E says:

I wondered the same thing, since the Madewell and Etsy tees are SO similar.

      • Belle says:

I looked and all of the comments and purchases on the item seem to be from the last few weeks. So I’m wondering if an enterprising Etsy seller saw people complaining the shirt was waitlisted and made something similar? I know that happens sometimes on Amazon.

    • Belle says:

I don’t know. That’s a good question. You might try asking one of the Instagram fashion sleuths like Diet Prada.

  3. Crystal says:

Four and eight years ago, you could find SO MUCH voter gear from companies ranging from TOMS to Rebecca Minkoff. I’m frankly frustrated with how few options there are this year. I would love to replace some of my well-worn items and I cannot. :/

On the subject of voting, 118 million American women are eligible to vote. In the 2018 election, 49 million of them (40%) did not vote. Let’s change that this time.

  5. Melanie says:

Thank you Abra for long supporting voter engagement. Your post from years ago about what to wear for door knocking and get out the vote efforts is still a favorite. Therefore, I am disappointed that some of your options (and those mentioned in the comments on Etsy) do not support voter engagement and education. With great non-partisan groups like When We All Vote, She Should Run or other grassroots organizations have t-shirts, collaborations with designers (like the Clare V shirt above) and merchandise that are an important source of funding and create a link to the larger work the groups do. It is bigger than the tee, so thanks in advance for voting in November (and all those other times we get to exercise this essential right)!

    • Monica T says:

Thank you for these recommendations, I was really dismayed by the Etsy shop that was also selling QAnon merchandise. They are entitle to sell what they like, and I am entitled to not support them profiting off of conspiracy theories that damage our democracy.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
