The Commute: No. 12

A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult. — Melinda Gates

Bring It Up. Ellevest’s Sallie Krawcheck talks about how to negotiate a salary at your new job.  Because closing the age gap starts with your own paycheck.

Bop It. Shopbop always has the most beautiful items.  These are their best pieces under-$125: a Line & Dot sweater, this BB Dakota jacket, this JOA long-sleeve dress, and these hot pink mules.

Bienvenue. Apparently, not everyone loves Paris.

Bottom’s Up. Racked traveled to Italy to see if M.Gemi were really made as well as Italian shoes that cost 3x as much.  Watch the video, and then, head over to their site to do a little shopping. Their Fortuna’s are my favorite work flat.

Beauty and the Beast. I hated my nose growing up. So I related to this Vogue article about how we learn to love our perceived flaws.

Better Things. Cuyana’s cult-favorite cosmetic travel case set is out in new colors for spring.  I love the soft rose.  I’m also smitten with their new French terry dress.

Be Not Afraid. Are money worries keeping you up nights?  Girlboss covers five common money fears and how to overcome them.

Beach Baby. This frill-strap, dotted ASOS bikini is so cute. It also comes in red.  Need a one-piece? Try this frilly black one piece.

Blank Spaces. If your wall has a big empty space, MyDomaine can teach you how to fill it.  And if you need art, check out Minted.  I own several pieces from there and love them.

Bargain Hunter. Inexpensive fashions can still look great.  Express has this gorgeous contrast trim blouse, and these belt-tied dress pants.  So if you haven’t visited the gem of the 90s retail scene for awhile, maybe it’s time to try again.

What I’m Cooking.  These healthy, simple Crockpot Burrito Bowls.

What I’m Listening To. The Steve Nicks and Dave Grohl performance of Landslide.

What I Bought. This simple locket on a 30″ chain.

Just bought my first pair of M.Gemi after saving up and absolutely love them!
I always end up scratching the pointed toe though (I’m guessing the way I walk) and want to take all measures here not to do that. Any pointers to not do that or to protect them?

    • SW says:

Find a great shoe repair person in your city! I recently took a pair of black pointed flats that were terribly scuffed on the toes to my local cobbler, and they restored the leather and put a thin piece of rubber along the tip of the sole. They look brand new and it cost about $20. I’ve also had cobblers put a “toe tap” on the front of a heeled shoe to protect it from scuffing too much.

      • Lauren says:

agreed. i love the point, but scuff them up. i agree with the toe point thing. i just paid $45 to have a pair resoled and cleaned up, but they are so perfectly broken in and comfortable.

  2. Nicole says:

Well, I guess I am not alone in my worries about debt. I often do worry that my boyfriend is going to feel like I ruined his life with my student loan debt. I know I feel like I might have ruined my own at times.

    • beth says:

I’m right there with you! My favorite time to worry if I’ve put myself (or my BF, or any future children I may or may not have) in a bad place with two graduate degrees worth of student loan debt is about 2AM on a night I really should be getting actual sleep. <>

But seriously, you’re 100% not alone there.

  3. Christine says:

I have the M. Gemi Fortunas too and love them so much for work. I think the pointed toe makes them so much more chic than rounded toe flats.

  4. Jess says:

With retirement, the biggest thing that I can recommend is immediately start saving for it. Even if you earn $20,000 a year. Run the numbers, what you save in your 20s makes all the difference. And the second thing that I’ve found to be helpful is don’t spend money if you don’t have it. So hard to do in this social media, I deserve it world.

great post – i clicked on like almost every link 🙂

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
