The Break: October 10th.

Oct 10, 2017

Quote of the Day.

“In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man; if you want anything done, ask a woman.”  — Margaret Thatcher

The Top Story.

The Unintended Consequences of Sexual Harassment Scandals. (NYTimes)

It’s 2017, and ‘working while female’ is still a thing.  How do we advance if men are afraid to mentor us?  How do we build relationships when men stand “10 feet away” from us for their comfort?  When are these men going to realize that if you treat us with respect, see us as equal to our male peers and keep your hands to yourself, there won’t be a problem?

Probably around the same time that people stop assuming I’m the candidate’s wife just because I’m female and standing next to him…

The Daily Reads and Links.

1) This Rebecca Taylor suiting jacket is sublime, and sale-priced.

2) It’s not about you. Stop taking s**t personally at work. (Above the Law)

3) 50% off Ann Taylor, code HURRYUP. This fringe-trim sweater and faux-wrap dress caught my eye.

4) The New Midlife Crisis. Powerful read. (Oprah.com)

5) Baublebar has a new ‘fine’ jewelry collection. This ring set is a must.

6) 5 Dating Tips if You Hate Dating. (Man Repeller)

The Daily Ws.

What I’m Baking. Ritz Carlton’s Chocolate Chip Cookies on this silicone mat.

What I’m Wearing. These Sonix blue tortoise, cat-eye sunglasses.

What I’m Reading. Killers of the Flower Moon, about the Osage Reign of Terror.

Instagram of the Day.

YVA_MM is my new favorite Instagram account.  It’s smaller (1,500 followers), but the photos are just breathtaking.  I can almost feel the storm rolling in.

Re: The times story on men being more careful around women. Sigh. This woman came up with a better way –

I’m beside myself with laughter at The Rock Test. My immediate team doesn’t need the article, but I suspect others in my org might.

    • Monica T says:

Each dry run was better than the last! It seems hilarious and yet it feels like it needs to be said. I feel so lucky to work with men who can treat me as a member of the team (possibly like I’m The Rock), and yet should I have to feel LUCKY not to be masturbated in front of by colleagues? Nope.

  2. Cate says:

I enjoy your blog everyday but I wanted to point out that your description of Killers of the Flower Moon is problematic. Your phrasing makes it seem as thought the Osage were the perpetrators of a reign of terror. Someone who doesn’t dig any deeper and is unfamiliar with the story could come away with that mistaken interpretation and casually mention it to another.

  3. Denise says:

The article on “The New Midlife Crisis” was highly insightful and compelling. I am late GenX (40), parenting 2 young children without support at home. I make a good salary and am generally successful at work, if not a little stalled, but I am freaking exhausted. Like sit on the couch and drink wine one night a week while crying at Grey’s Anatomy reruns exhausted. I thought I was the only one…apparently not!

    • Jules says:

That article really hit home for me too. I’m kind of the Gen-X/Millennial hybrid, and could relate so much. I’m in a good place now, but my fear is being easily replaceable in a few years, either by younger workers or AI. Conversely, I’m also worried about doing THIS for the next 20-30 years as well…

  4. Elizabeth says:

That Oprah article was seriously depressing. I felt hope sliding away while my stress levels rose with every word.
