Belle's Weekly Reading: Summer Rain Edition

I am so over this humidity. Rainy and hot is my least favorite D.C. weather, and it looks like I’m in for a full week of it. Well, I wasn’t planning on styling my hair this week anyway, so I might as well hangup my curling iron and call it a day.
This week, I found some great new blogs, some interesting discussion topics and few tidbits that brightened my day. So let’s get on with it, shall we?
Going Digital. I feature a lot of pieces from Zara on this blog, and every time that I do someone laments that they can’t buy the item online. Well, lament no more. On September 7, the retailer will launch an online site. Ladies, hide your credit cards.
For Jobseekers. Usually when fashion magazines publish a guide on what to wear to a job interview, I laugh out loud. They typically choose outfits that are inappropriate for any workplace other than a fashion magazine. So imagine my surprise when FabSugar’s video on how to dress for a job interview is actually helpful.
Now, I’m not sure how many job seekers can afford Brian Atwood high heels, but one thing at a time.
Good Things, Small Packages. I always find the best things on Twitter. Recently, I discovered a lovely blog called Extra Petite. Filled with beauty tutorials, outfit ideas and instructional vieos, this blog is a great resource for petite ladies and their taller counterparts. A definite must read.
Thank Heaven for Little Girls. Last week, I met a co-worker’s little girl for the first time. My first instinct was to tell her how pretty her dress was, but since I had just read this post from Joanna Goddard, I didn’t.
Jo argues that if we want girls to learn that they are more than just their looks, we need to stop greeting them with compliments. Instead we should ask them about their hobbies and the books they’re reading. Harder than it sounds, but definitely worth a try.
The ListMaker. I love when magazines put together lists of beauty products that are favorites. This time, Glamour made a list of reader favorites. Maybe you’ll discover a few new favorites of your own.
As a big fan of your blog, I am very honored to be on here! Thank you, Belle, for the kind words. I watched that video from fabsugar and thought they did a nice job for the creative interview attire. None of the outfits are truly appropriate for a conservative or traditional job interview, but I agree the tips are much better than the absurd “interview” outfits other fashiony sites usually showcase!

I'm torn over the Joanna Goddard piece. On the one hand, I absolutely agree that we need to model real conversations that matter to little girls (and boys) better and not lead them to think that the only thing that's important about them is how they look. On the other hand, I'd be a little bummed out if I wore a fabulous new pair of shoes to work and nobody noticed or complimented them. Is it wrong to want to be noticed for both our beauty and our brains?
My sister and have, however, talked about this exact thing now that she has a daughter (who's only 9 months old) – while we think she's beautiful and adorable, is it really what we should praise her for? It's not like she has any control over that – so we try to focus on complimenting her efforts and her accomplishments. But it's hard not to squeal over how cute she is. Sigh.
