Event: Front Row Bethesda

May 5, 2011

“I say that half your life is spent trying to get out of a small town and the other half trying to get back to one.”–Kelly Cutrone

A few years ago, I lived with a girl who was addicted to reality TV.  Addicted.  And her drug of choice was The Hills.

One day, she burst into my room and exclaimed, “Belle, you’ve got to come watch, this woman is just like you.”  That was how she introduced me to my idol, Kelly Cutrone.

Girls are taught to be deferent, selfless, nurturing.  Then we spend most of our professional lives trying to unlearn this programming, desperately searching for the balance.  So a woman who was successful, unapologetic, and willing to be disliked, appealed to me.

Finally, a woman whose professional advice consisted of more than, “You catch more flies with honey!”

(My political science professor almost died when I told her I wasn’t interested in flies.  I liked accolades and money.)

My copy of Cutrone’s first book, If You Have to Cry Go Outside, is riddled with Post-It flags.  I received her second book, Normal Gets You Nowhere, on Saturday.  I’ve already read it cover-to-cover.  Twice.

Reading her book, I’m reminded of a quote from Lauryn Hill, “Fantasy is what we want. Reality is what we need.”

So when Miss M told me that Kelly Cutrone was coming to The Front Row event in Bethesda on May 20th, I almost fainted.

If you’ve never been, The Front Row is the area’s best fashion event of the year.  Hosted by Federal Realty and the shops on Bethesda Row, the multi-day event features a screening of the Bill Cunningham documentary, a fashion show and a number of amazing sales and events.

I know that Bethesda is a bit of a trek, but the event is worth every minute of hell spent on the Red Line.  As for Kelly Cutrone’s book signing, the line forms behind me, ladies.

  1. Kelly says:

I am so with you! Her first book was one of the best books I've read about women in business. I found myself nodding along as I was reading and I appreciated how she cuts through the BS. Definitely going to this, thanks for the heads-up!

  2. Ms. B says:

I would love to get to go to this event. Belle, you must go for both of us and post a review. Currently reading Mika Brzezinski's attempt at the same topic for 40 plus. The cumulative of the contributors are good, but Cutrone is the trail blazer.

GMTA!! I just put this on my calendar yesterday!!! Would love to do a cocktails meet up if you are interested!

  4. Lolabolt says:

On one hand, I'd like to go and profess my love for Kelly as she made me much more comfortable with being an honest badass in my own life. On the other, I'd likely have to go by myself (I can only assume the bf would politely decline) annnddd large groups of people irritate me. Decisions, decisions…

  5. LR says:

Do anyone know if you can bring your own copy of her book to be signed or does it have to purchased at the event?

  6. Belle says:

According to BrandLink, they will have the new book for sale, but if you have one already, you can bring it.

  7. LR says:

Thanks, Belle. Which of her two books did you like best?

Also, according to this blog https://thecapitolfashionista.blogspot.com/2011/04/dc-style-event-bethesda-row-welcomes.html
Cutrone will be signing copies of her book at Lebanese Taverna, after the fashion show. But I wouldn't hold my breathe — best to arrive at 5pm for the official signing.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
