Ask Belle: Campaign Sleeping Attire

Oct 6, 2010

Dear Belle,

I’m volunteering with a team of traveling campaign staffers this cycle, and I have a strange problem.  I will be sharing sleeping space with other people, male and female people, and I have no idea what to bring to sleep in.  I usually wear mini-shorts and tanks to bed, but I don’t think that that would be appropriate in this case.

Do you have any thoughts?

Well, that is a strange problem indeed.  But kudos for thinking about what would be appropriate in advance of your arrival, I know I would be a little taken aback by the post-collegiate return of co-ed sleeping quarters.

My advice?  Sweats.  Yes, I’m advocating for the wearing of sweatpants.  But only for sleeping!  You are not to wear them outside of the bedroom.  Got it?  Good.

Fleece Pullover Tunic (Gap, $40)

Ribbed Tee (Venus, $12)

This tank has a shelf bra built in to it.  This will be important for modesty’s sake.

Simple Drawstring Pants (Gap, $25)

I had to share a hotel room with my boyfriend's parents on a recent trip and had a similar issue. I wanted to look cute, but not at all sexy and definitely not childish. I went with a pair of cotton pajama pants and a plain, fitted t-shirt. Cute and flattering, but appropriate and comfortable. Hope this helps!

Meg, I think you should be nominated for sainthood! There's no way I could handle sharing a hotel room with my in-laws.

  3. I usually wear campaign t-shirts and sweatpants on political trips.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
