For Casual Monday.  This skirt isn’t for everyone, but I’m trying to branch out a bit with my wardrobe and pull a few great pieces that are a little outside my comfort zone.  Plus, I love the mix of grey, black and citron.  If you like the idea of a geometric print, but want something a bit safer, try this black and white pencil skirt.

I like the monochromatic look of pairing a grey blouse with a grey-accented necklace.  And this blouse from Iris & Ink, with its basic shape and variety of colors, will quickly become a wardrobe staple.  If you’re looking to spend a bit less on the blouse, I love this punchy coral silk t-shirt for $69.

Forever21 has some great bracelets right now.  This cuff picks up the triangle pattern in the skirt, but I also love this chunky hinge cuff and this awesome layered cuff.  And if you like the open-work bracelets that are trendy right now, this simple bracelet is $7.

Need help keeping your cheaper jewelry pieces looking new?  Spray them with clear coat from Krylon to prevent them from wilting on you.

To complete the outfit, I added a simple pair of round pumps and a basic bowler bag.  Zara has some great handbags right now with basic shapes and colors that aren’t boring, so give them a look if you’re in the market.

For the hair, I would wear it down.  Wearing it up might be too severe with such a bold, printed skirt.  For the makeup, I would keep it simple with a natural looking lip color (shade 003) and some black liner.

For Casual Friday.  I don’t wear pants very often.  And I haven’t owned a pair of chinos since 2005, but I would buy these pants tomorrow if I wasn’t taking a little break from shopping.  Slightly longer than a capri with a bright, summery color, I think they’re a great choice for cooler climates or chilly offices.

Otte makes the greatest blouses.  I love all of them.  This is their Chloe blouse, but I also ardently endorse their Alex top, their Momo blouse and their Sophie top.  They’re not cheap, but if you like silk blouses, you’ll get your wear out of these great basics.

How great is this tote?  It’s the perfect casual work bag, and $79?  Awesome.

I bought these sandals from Zara in gold last summer and wore them to death.  They weren’t super comfortable for long distances, but for every day wear, a good choice.  Plus, the covered toe makes them a good choice for the office.  I bought these Maiden Lane sandals from Gilt as replacements.

I added some aviators (my fave) and a classic dome ring to complete the look.  If you’d like a less-expensive alternative, try this pyramid dome ring or this absolutely fab two-tone, hammered ring from Chico’s.

For the hair, I would wear it in a low side ponytail or a down and wavy.  For the makeup, I’d wear a pink gloss, some grey nail polish (Essie Smokin’ Hot is my new favorite) and a pop of pink blush on the cheeks.

Congratulations!  Both on the pregnancy and the newfound reason to buy a whole new wardrobe!  Just kidding…kind of.

I’ll start off by saying that maternity suits are really hard to find.  I do firmly believe that you get a little bit of a pass on being as formal as everyone else when it comes to workwear when you are pregnant.  No one really expects you to have your normal closet depth when you are growing another person, and most days you could get away with one notch down on the formality ladder.  However, I understand that if you are going to court, or a very high level meeting, etc., a suit is important.

If you just found out that you are expecting and it’s your first baby, you have some time before you need to think about for reals maternity clothes.  I would encourage you to get a Bella Band, which is this stretchy tube of fabric that allows you to wear your pre-pregnancy pants unbuttoned for a while.  You will be the envy of all your friends, male and female.  You’ll also probably be able to get away with your regular suit jackets for another few weeks as well depending on how your rib cage/bust area is growing.

Next, get ready to invest.  I know the temptation is to say, “I’m only going to wear it for 9 months, so I’m not going to spend a lot,” but don’t do it.  You are going to wear the everloving crap out of your maternity clothes, plus, you’ll need them after you give birth (sad but true).  And you don’t want to buy super cheap stuff that will look cheap and worn out after a few wearings.

If you work in a professional office, I would buy at least one good full suit in a neutral color like this black suit from Jules and Jim, this slim legged black one from Olian, or this tie front one from Maternal America. Some other good brand names to look for are Ripe, Noppies, and Isabella Oliver.

Then, I would get a pencil skirt, another basic jacket, dress pants in a grey or navy, and a sheath dress (love love love this one from More of Me Maternity).  These things will let you mix and match so you can always have a jacket and dress bottom without needing a full suit.

Double Duty.  Once you have solid basics, you can fill in as needed throughout your pregnancy with less expensive tops and dresses from Gap Maternity, Loft Maternity, Topshop or Asos. These will work under blazers, for more casual days at the office, and when you are not at work.  Also, don’t rule out everything in your closet or at the store just because it’s not “maternity.”  There are lots of open cardigans, long blouses and t-shirts in the stores these days that will look fine on a pregnant body. (Editor’s Note: A friend wore size 12 DvF wrap dresses for her entire pregnancy and then put them up on eBay afterwards.)

Sales.  A lot of great maternity retailers are have big sales pretty frequently, like Isabella Oliver, Belly Dance Maternity, and Figure 8 Maternity.  Shopbop has a pretty sweet maternity section for denim and dresses and they typically have a sale or some kind of promotion happening all the time.  If you are a little farther along or willing to spend now, you can find some great deals on basics.

Also, keep an eye on Gilt children’s section or Zulily because they often have maternity wear on sale, although I have heard that some lines like Rosie Pope produce lower quality clothes for those sites, so make sure you can return any piece if you don’t like it.

Keep in mind.  One huge factor to remember when shopping for maternity clothes is that your body changes every day.  Every.single.day. So something that fit you on Tuesday is now a total peep show on Thursday.  Heels ok on Monday? Well, Friday afternoon is a totally different story.

Make sure that you are comfortable and covered. Try scarves over shirts that are looking a little low cut, invest in cute flats that are a little big and use an gel insert until you need the room, a maternity slip or shapewear piece goes a long way, and wrap dresses are indispensable.  Dress the body you have that day, not the one you had before you got pregnant.  And have fun!

Spring Signs Necklace ($38)

I love long necklaces.  This Anthropologie necklace has enough substance that it would look lovely solo or layered with another piece, like this gold teardrop necklace.  And if grey isn’t your preferred color, it also comes in white and brilliant turquoise.

I also like this long necklace with large tortoiseshell buckles along the chain, and this Allen Schwartz piece with orange enamel stations is nice too.  But my favorite has to be this chunky Ben Amun pendant necklace.

Looking for something more delicate?  This Argento Vivo necklace has a lovely two-tone look.  I adore this long pendant necklace from Alexis Bittar.  And I love the simplicity of this silver Judith Jack station necklace and the mix of textures on this gold station necklace.

Want a dash of color?  This Kate Spade necklace has a bright and happy mix of yellows and greens, and this inexpensive Anne Klein necklace comes in lovely mix of purples and pinks.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a necklace under-$25, this simple gold-tone station necklace and this long silver tassel necklace both caught my eye.  And if you live in D.C., I always see a bevy of necklaces for sale at the Eastern Market flea on Sundays.

Hi There!

I am looking for suggestions for what to wear to a professional networking function that is held at an outdoor sporting event (here, a baseball game). Men have it easy and can throw on khakis and a golf shirt, but I have trouble each time I need to put something together. Any tips?

Men have it so easy. They put on a new tie with yesterday’s suit and call it a new outfit. Not that I’m jealous…okay, I’m insanely jealous. But regardless, dressing well for sporting events that are also professional events can be tough.

There are two schools of thought on this matter. The first says to wear a shirt that supports the local team with a nice pair of jeans, good flats and a nice, casual tote. I, however, subscribe to the school of though that says you should treat the game like casual Friday and wear a comfortable but presentable jersey dress and casual shoes. Keep the accessories to a minimum and lighten the makeup a bit.

I wear this Loft dress on the weekends, and it would work well for a game. So would this striped dress or this red one (provided you’re attending a Nats game). And if you’re style is on the preppy side, try a polo dress.

If a dress isn’t for you, you can recreate the outfit from last week that featured a pair of chino shorts and a cotton button up blouse. And if you don’t want to wear shorts, and I wouldn’t blame you, try a pair of ankle-length chinos. Not high-wader capris, but pants that touch the ankle joint.

I work in a casual office setting and am in need of a flat black sandal for the summer. I’m specifically looking for a shoe that doesn’t leave my whole foot exposed (like those thongs with heel straps) or one that isn’t really a sandal (think peep toe). I’m also tall without shoes so I want something with low to no heel (I’m a fan of the very low wedge or flats). I went to a store the other day in hopes of finding one, but was absolutely overwhelmed by the options. I left with my head spinning and no shoes. Can you recommend a few inexpensive options? Thanks! I didn’t see much available in black that would qualify as ‘inexpensive’, but I did find a few things. This pair of Dolce Vita sandals are a good choice, or these open-toe, black D’orsay flats from Nine West. In the ‘also worth a look’ category are these gunmetal and black Cole Haans, and these low wedges with a strappy, closed toe.

Skinny rings are everywhere right now, including on my fingers. Gorjana makes nice ones. I especially like this set of thin stacking rings and this sea-inspired set with a starfish and a sand dollar. But if you’re looking for style and selection, you need to be on Etsy. This tiny chevron ring and this hammered metal ring with open-work are my favorites.

I’m spending the next few months as a summer associate at a big law firm in Seattle. I walk to work when the morning temperature is in the 50s/60s. Ordinarily, I’d wear a denim jacket but that won’t cut it walking into a law firm. Any suggestions for lightweight jackets that are not denim and not a trench? (Since it’s always so grey here, I try to avoid rainwear when I can!)

Banana Republic is my go-to for a-line cut work skirts.  I also like this pleated number from Anne Klein.

Two. Ferragamo created an ad campaign showcasing their Varina and Vara shoes on the feet of 21 of the world’s most stylish women, and it is impossibly gorgeous.  It’s caused me to have Varina flats on the brain for weeks now.  If you want the look for somewhat-less, I would suggest these Kate Spade flats.

Three. This dress is so chic, I just adore it.  The high neck halter is a good choice for those of us with smaller busts.  (Though you may need a backless, strapless bra.)  I also like this $89 dress from Ann Taylor, and this maxi-dress from Caslon.  If you’re plus-sized, give this dress a look.  Petites may like this long dress with tribal print.

Four. I like this bracelet because it looks like this much more expensive cuff from Jennifer Fisher.  It also comes in a thinner bangle for those of you who prefer something a bit more subtle.  The thinner bracelet could easily be layered with other cuffs (like this one, and this one) for a chic look.

Five. This floral top would look great with trousers and a long necklace or with a brightly colored pencil skirt.  I don’t usually wear a lot of big prints, but the neutral palette gives this a more subtle look.

Six. This striped skirt reminds me of warm summer days and sail boats.  It would look great with a button-up blouse tucked into it.  Want the look for less?  Check out this navy and yellow Anne Klein skirt or this not-so-perfect Raoul skirt.

Seven.  Colored enamel bracelets are on my must-have list for summer.  You can use them to coordinate or contrast with colored clothing pieces or liven up neutrals.  This chain bracelet is fab, but I also like this simple bangle set or this fabulous printed bangle.  And if you’re looking for variety in texture, Neiman Marcus has you covered.

Eight.  I love clutches, but carrying one in the crook of your arm can be uncomfortable if you’re forced to do it for too long.  So when I spotted this Coach bag with a clutch shape and handle, I fell in love.  If you want a similar look for less, this Limited clutch is a steal.  You can also try a wristlet clutch, like this fun geometric print purse that costs under-$25.

When I originally spotted these Grapefruit Mojitos on Pinterest, all I could think was, “Yes. Yes, I need that.”  The perfect combination of sour, sweet and herbs, this cocktail from Iowa Girl Eats will be served at many upcoming rooftop dinner parties.  Heck, I may stop at the grocery store on the way home for a few Ruby Reds.

The Google Glass has been generating more buzz than a swarm of Africanized honey bees.  A few days ago, I was walking through Farragut North when I spotted a man wearing one.  The way the other commuters were staring at him, some were literally tripping over themselves to get a better look.

All of this got me thinking about the difference between consumers who are “early adopters” and those who are happy to wait awhile and buy new-ish things.

I’ve never been so excited about a product that I would wait in line for more than 30-minutes to buy it.  I’ve never sat outside overnight to be the first one to see a newly released movie.  And I don’t foresee that changing.  The way I see it, the movie will still be out next weekend, and I can order the gadget later or pick up that limited edition dress on eBay tomorrow.

What about you, have you ever waited in line to buy a product first or to buy something that was limited edition?  If so, what was it, and how long did you wait?

Being a planner and a list maker is great.  But at some point, you learn the difference between blazing a path and letting a path confine you.  I hear a lot of women–friends, relatives, colleagues–saying, “I want to {insert dream here}, but now just isn’t the right time.”  Sometimes this is true, but sometimes, women use timing as a mask for their fears.  So the next time you postpone something you really want, ask yourself why, and then ask yourself whether you can make now the right time.

Just like the quote from Tina Fey a few weeks ago said:  Say yes, you’ll figure the rest out later.

1) Today is Flag Day. Celebrate the Star Spangled Banner by watching this 11-year-old boy blow the roof off the stadium with his rendition of The National Anthem.

2) Did you know that someone actually owns the copyright to ‘Happy Birthday’?  It’s why chain restaurants make up their own birthday songs, and television anchors aren’t permitted to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to one another on air, unless they want to pony up the royalty fee.  But one brave soul has stepped forward to sue Warner Music to ensure that we are all permitted to celebrate our loved ones by singing off-key.

3) I’m trying to add some new pieces to my jewelry box.  So far, I am drawn to this enamel and crystal ring, these geode earrings and this rustic-looking rose gold necklace.

4) Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson was flagged for ‘excessive celebration’ by the judge handling his domestic violence charge and will spend 30 days in jail as a result of his antics.  Now, if only we could send this judge to Los Angeles to hear Lindsay Lohan’s case.

5) The leather-accented shift dress that I was craving all spring went on sale for 50-percent-off on Monday.  Of course, I recently decided to go on a shopping-hiatus until mid-July, so the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

6) Feeling charitable?  Here’s hoping you haven’t donated to one of the 50 Worst Charities.  It’s sad how many of these organizations purport to support law enforcement, veterans’ groups and cancer patients.

7) If you follow me on Twitter, you know that donuts are my obsession.  A friend (or is she an enemy?) bought me this donut pan for my birthday, and I used it to make these incredible little pastries.  This would be why the seams in my pencil skirts have been giving me the side-eye.

8) I cannot wait to give myself a manicure with these amazing Urban Decay polishes that I bought last week.  They’re everything.  The charcoal grey is my favorite, it’s shimmery and a bit edgy.

9) Several years ago, I attended a wedding where one of the bridesmaid stood up for the couple at the ceremony, skipped the reception and never spoke to the couple again.  I thought this disappearing act was weird until I read this article from Slate: “This is the Last Time I Will Ever See You.”

10) Need a good gift for a whiskey lover?  Check out this leather bound notebook, which includes details about different regions and distilleries, and cocktail recipes.

11) And last, but by no means least, Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.  A Republican from Montana, Rankin was sworn-in in March 1917, more than three years before the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote.  Rankin was a truly incredible woman who led the way for all the amazing female elected officials who came after her.
