Ask Belle: Resale Salon is Back, Finally

0

Belle,

Are you still operating the Resale Salon?

GG

As you might imagine, things have been very busy around the Land of Belle.  As a result, the Resale Salon took a hiatus.  I was hoping to resurrect it in a forum form, so that readers could post their own items when and how they wanted to, but this turned out to be more work than previously thought.  But I’ve received a lot of emails like this one over the past few weeks, so I decided to bring it back.

Because I didn’t know if the items that were sent to me by readers last year were still valid, I posted some items that I had set aside for sale from my own closet.  If you would like to list something (or several somethings) send them to me by COB Saturday, and I will post them Sunday.

To submit something, you send me a description and a photo or photos of the item (no more than three).  Make sure to specify size, brand, price, and shipping costs.  See full directions here.

So head over to the Resale Salon and start saving on items from Robert Rodriguez, Rebecca Taylor, Banana Republic and more.  And if you have something to list break out the camera and turn your unworn clothes into cash for something new.

Belle's Weekly Reading: Holiday Mayhem

0

Gift Guides. There will only be two posts today.  I was preparing for The CHS Holiday Gift Guide Extravaganza (trademark pending), and lost track of time.  Apologies.

This year, we will be featuring online gift guides as well as gift ideas that can be purchased at local shops (if you’re in the District, of course).  Hopefully, this will help a few of you last minute shoppers find gifts!

If you are looking for a certain type of gift or a gift for a certain person and you would like Belle’s help, please send an e-mail to capitolhillstyle (at) gmail (dot) com.

Holiday Fashion.  If you’re still in search of an outfit for your yuletide soirees, Mizhattan has some lovely ideas including this pair of dresses for the fashion minimalist (that’s me!).  Style Bakery also has some great ideas for how to style the same party dress two ways for two separate occasions.  And if you need tips for the perfect holiday updo, The Budget Babe has some fab suggestions.

Holiday Treats.  If you have a need for holiday treats, Cupcakes and Cashmere has some lovely recipes that you’re sure to enjoy.  As long as you don’t count calories, her Homemade Twix Bars, Cigarette Russes and Chocolate-Covered Orange Peels are sure to please.

Resale Salon.  I realized this weekend that it’s been forever since I published items in the Resale Salon.  If you have some winter attire that you would like to contribute, please email me.

The Resale Salon listings are free to readers, run until the item sells, and we sell about 50% of the items published within one month.  So it’s an easy way to clean out your closet before the Xmas gifts arrive!

Find more details here, postings will go up this week.

See you tomorrow for the start of the gift guide season!

xoxo,

Belle

New Summer Items in the Resale Salon!

0

In a few weeks, I will be headed out West for Miss M’s wedding and let’s just say it is going to set this Hill Staffer back a pretty penny to cover the costs.  Thus, I hit up the reserve fund also known as my closet for some items to sell.  These are items that are in like new condition but just haven’t made it in to strong rotation in my closet.

There are items from Milly, Rebecca Taylor, DvF, J.Crew, Dooney & Bourke, Anthropologie, Banana Republic and more.  So head over to the Resale Salon and see if you can score a bargain before someone else does.    And if you have an item to list in the Resale Salon, check out the sale guidelines to turn your unworn clothes into cash.

Suiting Tutorial: When It's Over

0

After a couple of years of wear, one of two things will happen to your suit, either a) it will start to show it’s age, or b) you will get bored and stop wearing it.  Whichever affliction hits, your suit is likely to end up on the Island of Unworn Clothes also known as the back of your closet.  But what if it didn’t have to be that way?  What if you could reinvigorate your suit piece by piece?

Bringing Back the Jacket

Andy & Debb Short-Sleeved Suits (Neiman’s, $1,100)

Please note that I am not advocating turning your suit into into a short suit.  That would be cray-zee talk.  Instead, I am telling you that for a few dollars a talented alterations person can shorten the sleeves on your blazer and give you something new to wear.  If you want to get really creative, you can even have it turned into a boyfriend style vest.

Livening Up the Pants

Valentino Lace Trip Pants (Neiman’s, $1,480)

These Valentino pants are incredible, even though they’re cigarette leg.  They also provide inspiration for how to add a little oomph to your old trousers.

Using a product like Fusible Web, you can attach a satin ribbon to the side of your wool suit trousers turning them into tuxedo pants.  Want to go even further?  You can add a lace detail to the waist band.  If you want to do better than fusible web, you can follow these directions and try to sew it yourself or pay an alterations person to do it for you.

Restyling the Skirt

Tri-Banded Skirt (Bebe, $59)

Colorblocking is one of the hottest trends in fashion.  If you have a navy pencil skirt laying around, you can add colored strips to the bottom or the top to create something brand new.  For a navy skirt, try two bands at the bottom, a thin grey one and a thicker citron yellow one.  If the skirt is black, you could add a feather trim for a look straight off the runway.  Who says that boring pencil doesn’t have personality?

And if all else fails, and you can’t breathe new life into the suit you’re just plain tired of, you can always sell it in the CHS Resale Salon.  New items are posted in groups every other Sunday.

Resale Salon Call for Submissions!

0

Ladies,

I’m going to add some new items to the resale salon on Sunday.  If you have some Spring/Summer clothes that you would like to sell for a fair price to your fellow fashionistas, you can find out more here

The Salon sells about 60-percent of the items posted within the first three weeks.  I’ve had great luck selling my gently used fashions, and it’s a great way to avoide the hassle of eBay and consignment shops.

Please send all entries to capitolhillstyle (at) gmail (dot) com.

xoxo
